Is he better than McDermott?

That's a tough one. Prohm has had better talent but McDermott had some decent talent as well. I think that Prohm has benefitted from having multiple NBA players (some who actually get good playing time) under him. McDermott's NBA talent wasn't necessarily like that. To me they are probably in the same ballpark, but I think McDermott has improved a bit as a coach the last handful of years at Creighton. So right now as we speak, I don't think Prohm is a better coach at all.

I think he’s talking about DeVries. Of course Prohm isn’t better than McDermott.

I understand the McDermott years at ISU weren’t great, but I think he’s proved himself more than a capable coach at Creighton.

I actually really admire what Greg did, he looked at his time here and made an honest assessment of what he did wrong, and he fixed it. Now he has a top 15 team every year.

Prohm can’t hold McDermott’s jock. McDermott struggled here but a lot of that was just circumstances. If McDermott had walked into the situation Steve did he’d still be here and be headed for ISU legend status. He was trying to fix a mess like Steve has made and had a lot of things against him. Steve just plain sucks.

You guys, it will be TJ.
To me at this point in time it would be like hiring Prohm all over again. Given where I live have watched TJ's teams in action. TJ still learning on the job.

Not sure how you sell a coach to a fanbase who could be .500 or less during his time at UNLV.

The 2 years prior to his arrival I believe UNLV had a higher winning percentage than they currently do under TJ.

Just not sure TJ is the right guy at this point in time for ISU.

I think Drake is just such a hard place to win at let's not even talk about going undefeated.

Who says DeVries wants to leave Drake? The fanbase at Drake just wants winning seasons, and going to NCAA tourney every once in a while. If he can win a few regular season crowns, beat UNI on a regular basis and graduate kids, that makes the Drake people happy. There is nowhere near the pressure on him there will be at ISU and he saw what happened with McDermott when he made the move from UNI to ISU. Also, he has been around Ben Jacobson who could have easily left UNI but stayed.

Because “pleasing the fanbase at Drake” means pleasing a few thousand people in the Des Moines area, while Iowa State is a Power 5 program that can pay him millions of dollars a year. Ben Jacobson is at UNI because he got a lifetime contract and to some that kind of security in a place where you’re happy is great. If DeVries didn’t have ambitions to higher things he would’ve never left his assistant job at Creighton.

I still maintain that McDermott was the right coach at the wrong time. He walked into a ********, and his best season was his last. He has matured a lot at Creighton, and consistently been a contender for the Missouri Valley/Big East title throughout his tenure.

“DeVries has been an assistant coach at Creighton since 2001, and he was a student manager 1998-2001. Since then, the Blue Jays have reached the postseason in 19 of his 20 seasons, including 12 NCAA Tournament berths. Last year, Creighton went 21-12 and lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Kansas State.

DeVries played his college basketball at Northern Iowa, starting for four years and scoring 1,084 points in his career.” Des Moines Register, back in 2018 when DeVries was hired. Since being hired, he won the Missouri Valley regular season in his first year, and in his second (and current year) he literally has not lost a game.

He has significant ties to the state of Iowa and an incredible resume. Would likely be a cheap hire that could be signed long-term. If we get him this year, the best basketball player in the state of Iowa comes with him. Someone give me a reason why he SHOULD NOT be the hire.

IMO people are going to be disappointed if they are counting on getting DeVries on the cheap. He will be a hot name, if Drake finishes strong, which means many schools looking to hire him. I would be surprised if ISU would get a home state deal.

Also, why hire him to a long-term deal (more than 4 years). No guarantee he would be better than Prohm.

Security is attractive to coaches. He will be cheaper than any other coach on the market because he has two years of head coaching experience and Drake plays in an insignificant conference. I would be shocked if Iowa State didn’t get a home state deal, given that he’s either lived in Iowa or on the border of Iowa his entire life. Low cost would mostly cancel out the negatives of a long term deal.
