Cytown Update

Ive said it before but I think a place with a setup like Iowa Taproom seems like it'd do great. Good food and a selection of Iowa beers (along with other drinks available for those that aren't beer drinkers) so there's an array of options but not dependent on the success of one lone brewery\brewer

That's way too many tap handles. An establishment in CyTown isn't going to have the everyday traffic a place like the tap Room or El Bait Shop has. IMO less is more, have maybe 12-15 beers on Tap and then serve your standard 16oz domestics. More and more bars are figuring this out.

Alcohol sales as a whole are declining.

In 2025, 54% of Americans reported drinking alcohol, the lowest level in the past 86 years, according to Gallup’s annual Consumption Habits Survey. The decline coincides with recent research indicating that any level of alcohol consumption could have a negative effect on a person’s health, according to a Gallup newsletter.

The drop in alcohol consumption is most pronounced among young adults, with the decline accelerating in recent years, Gallup reports. In 2023, 59% of people between 18 and 34 reported drinking alcohol; in 2025, that had fallen to 50%.
Becoming a country of party poopers.

If Cytown is going to have a brew pub... WEST-O would be a good choice. It is a big IF.
I don’t think that west o is big enough to pull something like that off. Plus I think to be successful in a place like this, you need a real food menu. Taprooms that sell pretzels and flatbread pizzas aren’t going to make it.

I think 30hop or a similar concept would be solid
I was about to say something like this, an established brand with a few locations where they can come in and get going from the start serving lots of folks. A restaurant/pub that isn't some generic national brand but something regional.

But 30hop is probably hok owned so not them lol.

One of the main owners/ operators (Dan Blum) is from Ames, but went to the U of I for business school. It wouldn't be shocking given his connection to Ames and presence in Ankeny (think he's involved with at least one more bar there).

Has there been any movement on any additional structures besides the McFarland clinic?

Got a “Discover Ames” magazine in the mail that says the Cytown Suites buildings will be breaking ground soon in Cytown. Guessing those will be the next buildings to start. Heard they have a decent chunk of them leased.

That magazine also showed The Linc on Lincoln Way as if it was ready to go.

My hot take on the craft brew tanking: Millennials love their IPAs and are now in their late 30's-40's with kids and don't go to microbrews very often anymore. It seems like 90% of the beers put out by microbrews are IPAs. At best, most places have like 7-8 IPAs, then one brown ale and maybe 1 stout. IPAs aren't that good.

Confluence has a lot more variety (the Milk Man is awesome), and I'm guessing they stick.
My son is at Iowa State. He drinks Coors Bangyet or Guiness.

His dad just retired from the Ames downtown Fareway after 48 years. Great family!
