Cyclone Sunday Bruns

This. "optimistic" is a good read.

I'd also add, that he isn't going to tear down some 20yo kid who isn't there yet. He has been that guy, and he has coached those guys, so he isn't going to lay into Neal or Bonifas or whoever with a flamethrower.

He's not going to say "he sucks, shouldn't be on the field, should give his scholarship back" kind of crap.

It really is a blessing that a lot of CFers aren't sideline reporters.

I myself included.

To be fair to both sides Bruns has been sipping the propaganda juice about the OL the last few years. If this OL continues to progress it's current trajectory he'll be the proverbial squirrel this time.

No.

He’s been mildly optimistic at times—which for someone as enthusiastically expressive as Bruns, seems like a lot.

He also chooses his words not to address the issue of athletes who…don’t necessarily belong on the field. His comments about his nineteen year old self being one of those players must have been a real catharsis for him. He doesn’t denigrate the kids themselves.

But when seeing the product on the field, he’s always called a spade a spade. The aforementioned Iowa game an exception.

While the majority of this thread are isolated personal misinterpretations, there's one area I hope Bruns can address. The most dramatically different play which returned outstanding results was that 'stacked I' short yardage play. What could he expect other teams do to counter that? And, is there an option out of that which could further complicate countering that play?
To be honest, I think that the primary value—or one of them—is the simple fact that every single team remaining in the schedule is going to have to spend time preparing for that formation.

*I noticed one replay where the second TE through was wildly looking around for someone to block—but all the good ones were taken. No one left. Fortunately, the RB (Lee?) didn’t even slow down.

The very first thing I recall Bruns saying as a sideline reporter was that KO, who was playing LT for ISU, would be better off inside.

How’d that turn out?
Remind me, where did KO play when people were paying him a bunch of money?

This is no disrespect to Bruns, up there with KO? I'd love to hear his take on that comment. My subjective comment is 1 has the best offensive resume of any ISU player in the NFL (maybe best overall but Matt Blair would be a tough argue) and the other was "just" a really good player for us in college. KO is on his own planet in the history of ISU O linemen

Nothing against KO, but Karl Nelson deserves to be in this conversation. He had a solid career as an OT in the NFL that would have been extended longer if he didn't have to battle being diagnosed with Hodgkins.
The third leg of the triumvirate would be Keith Sims. Three time Pro Bowler with the Dolphins protecting Marino.

As I recall, all three played LT at ISU.

FWIW, from what little I’ve been able to see, and picked up listening carefully to Clanton, Deylin Hasert is kind of a blend of the two guards. KO’s power, with a decent shot of KS’s sheer athleticism and flexiblilty.

It would be nice to get him fully healthy.

There's been a lot of sunshine pumping about the ISU OL over the Campbell years. Campbell himself, CF podcasts, CF posters, etc.

But Bruns seems to call it fairly. He'll compliment where due, but call out as well. Those later Dekkers games he was almost at a loss for words with how bad the OL was being coached.

I think Bruns is optimistic but relatively fair.

I will say that he definitely will point out when a RB isn’t doing their job correctly. I think he will defend the OL if it’s a “bad” rushing game but they played okay.

I listened to this today and IMO the biggest opinion from Bruns hasn’t been brought up in this string.

Towards the end of the podcast he generally mentions the amount of money some of the current players were offered by other schools.

To me, this is th biggest takeaway from the episode. Well done @brentblum and for what Campbell has created.

Not 100% on topic, but I had a meeting where I sat next to Bruns about 5 years ago. It was a hodge podge of Des Moines business leaders, and I was there to talk about some random environmental practices. I was floored with the conversation I had with him and the questions that he asked me about a topic that could not have had much relevance for his day to day. Came across as a great and engaging person.
