Cyclone FB players - what could have been

I loved Jarvis West. I thought he had a big future in the NFL as a Darren Sproles type of guy.

I thought Ernst Brun was the next Alge Crumpler.

I had high hopes for Aaron Wimberly.

My era was 2011-2014, so maybe I had rose colored glasses in an otherwise underwhelming time in ISU football.
Man, Jarvis West is one of my all time favorites. He was so electric on the field.

If we were to do MBB...you'd have to exclude all of the dudes who signed and never made it to campus or were off the team before the season: Ernest Brown, Jerome Harper, CJ Bruton, Ivan Chiriov...too many to count.

For me, I'd have to say Craig Brackins. Highest-rated recruit we've ever had, but was a horrible fit with McDermott who tried to turn him into a traditional big when his skillset was clearly more Kevin Durant.

Not sure if it was mentioned already, but Mike Warren. 1,300 yard rusher in 2015 as a sophomore. But each year had less and less productivity and finished with 105 yards his senior year. But he seemed like a great teammate even with his diminished role.
He was definitely a good teammate and a true cyclone. Still talks about the program often in twitter

He’ll always have a special place in my heart for sticking it out, graduating, and being a great teammate even though things probably didn’t go according to his plan. Showed a lot of character.

I view Rahshon Clark the same way. That entire Morgan team left but him. He stuck it out and was a great leader for those early McDermott teams.

This is not in the same breathe as yours, but I thought Re-Al Mitchell was going to be so good. Never really had a fair shake.
He didn't play at Ohio-he had every "shake" at ISU just wasn't as good as Purdy. Probably could have moved to flanker or DB but chose to transfer.

2020 and 2021 LBs
Aric Horne
Dae'Shawn Davis

I think:
2020: Both Reshirted? and got a few tackles in blowouts? and/or special teams
2021: Both Saw decent run as backup LBs
Both Then Transfered out.

2022 would have been Soph
2023- Jr
2024 (year ISU depleted at LB) Seniors' years.

ISU had been leaning toward "bigger" LBs, and these two seemed faster/quicker.
Maybe Better coverage backers (3rd down backers)?

I was excited to see them develop into their Soph/Jr/Sr Years.

Oh well.........

He had struggle with injuries, probably more significant than O-line problem. (Unless the suggestion is line play had effect on the injury risk.)
Courtney Messingham also really failed sam Richardson. He used him on run plays like 10% of the time. That guy was not a power 5 coordinator, recruiter, coach

“Sometimes when things don’t go your way it’s okay to stick around and help the next guy”

The OG of Campbells culture change.

I believe it was Elsworth. They were the top JC in the country back then.
Elsworth and Indian Hills were the best teams in the state and some of the better teams in the country, in the mid to late 70s, IHCC finished #2 in the nation and then dropped the sport the next year, mid 70s I would say. They had a couple of players that made the NFL in Rick Upchurch RB for the Broncos and another guy, Tony Galbreath that played for the Saints.

This list is endless.
Suspect the likes of Georgia, Bama, LSU, ND, OSU, etc, etc, etc... would offer 4*+ busts that would be mindwrecking.
End of day, our 3* have paved our way

For the old timers, it's Jerry Moses. It's not even close. He was considered one of the best Iowa athletes ever, along with Nile Kinnick, gary Thompson, Dan Gable, and Bob Feller. His NIL today would be millions.

Put it this way.

Tony Dorsett played RB for Johnny Majors at Pitt, won a title, Heisman, everything. Went on to the NFL and was ROY, all pro, Super Bowl champ. CFB Hall of Fame. NFL Hall of Fame.

Majors said Moses was better.

I wrote about this very topic for WRNL wayyyyy back in the day. My three choices were Jerry Moses, Chris Boskey, and ... (surprise!) Jack Trice.
That team with Moses has been our best shot at a natty.

Saw Moses play in high school. Touched the ball nine times. Was never tackled.

I know this an Iowa State thread for what might have beens, but the greatest in the history of college athletics is at TOE. Gale Sayers wanted to go to Iowa but Jerry Burns didn’t have time to meet him for his campus visit. Iowa was ranked No. 1 around that time. After the Sayers fiasco, Iowa didn’t have a winning season for 20 years.
