I’d love to stay undefeated but have BYU slotted as the top 4 seed from our auto bid by all these prognostications. Don’t tell me that kind of stuff doesn’t trickle into the locker room.

I also like that it’s just assumed Miami or Clemson will be seeded higher. Let that be for now. Computers don’t see any difference between ISU and Miami.

Safety is valid. Obviously that's different than maybe getting heavy snow/wind on game day.

I do wonder when the decision would be made to switch it, or if it'd just default to Twin Cities. If weather is unusually mild in central Iowa in late-November/early December maybe JTS surface would be OK??

ISU fans would travel well so it'd still have plenty of home-field feel in Mpls

Of course we won't have to "worry" unless we get an at-large slot, but this is general discussion anyway.
So basically this means teams from the south (Yay SEC!) who earn a home field game actually GET the home field advantage while any northern teams from B1G, ACC or BIG XII may not.

I had no idea this was the situation. I agree, ALL the games should be played at neutral sites if this could EVER happen.

Because we would know in advance a couple of weeks about hosting a playoff game, I wonder if there is something the field/turf crew to help preserve field conditions as much as possible. I know that they were using some special growth tarps or something a few years ago but no idea how they worked. I just think we would try to do everything we could to make the surface playable. The monetary potential of hosting a playoff game would be way more than the cost to maintain/repair the playing surface.

Well, maybe ISU needs to invest in a heated field like Lambeau. In the new age of playoffs it is probably needed in order to bring games to JTS in December
I know Wisconsin just spent $5.5 million on this upgrade for Camp Randall, but it's a pretty costly investment that would only be useful for one game in years we get seeded 5-8 in the CFP. I also think it would be more expensive to implement for a natural grass field than a turf field. Doesn't seem like a great financial choice.

Just wild hypothetical, not predicting playoff.

Would the best approach be to just remove every bit of snow immediately as if you were trying to play a game that day? Things like covering before a snow storm?

Or is there already enough moisture in the ground that it wouldn’t matter if you have a few snow storms on it?

That’s never going to happen in the current financial climate.

I'm not sure there are many schools that would consider this investment. Maybe Ohio State and Penn State? Even Michigan has Ford Field that is close. They might still do it with all of their BIG money.

Both good points. ScottyP "do whatever is realistic," (and I'm no expert about what is possible).

I agree with Cyclonsin it wouldn't be worth a heated field in the outside chance of getting a playoff game. Maybe if ISU becomes a powerhouse and/or playoff structure changes so it's much more common.

I don't have time to do a deep-dive, I'm curious what northerly NFL stadiums have (1) natural grass (2) no field-heating element. I realize budget-wise whatever they have to do to make it playable in January conditions ISU couldn't match.

Seems pretty cheap to me. In the grand scheme of things, if ISU wants to be the power of the new look Big 12. This is $6M I’d spend as the AD

We can still do that and not need the field upgrade by winning the conference every year.

Besides, it's going to be extremely rare that an at-large Big XII team doesn't have at least 4 at-large SEC/B1G/ACC teams ahead of it.

If the format changes and the odds of hosting increase (as mentioned about by Cyclones500), maybe look at it then, but right now there are SOOOOOO many better ways to spend that money.

It's my understanding that the moisture in the ground is the problem. The one ad-hoc solution I've seen is covering the entire playing surface with a giant tarp and position jet heaters around the edges to pump a ton of hot air under the tarp. We could probably do that, but I suspect moving the game to US Bank is still more feasible.

I think we have tarped the field a few times already in the past late in the season. Not sure what the purpose of it was.

Would they make Ohio St, Penn St or Oregon switch to a neutral field dome too?
Given the weather in their northern climates.
Or is that just an Iowa St thing…

I wondered about that.

First example that came to me was U-M, but Ford Field is like 45 minutes away so that still seems mostly like a home site. Certainly a different type of atmosphere. Where would an Ohio State "host" game be moved?

Nah. It’s already been floated Michigan would likely go to Ford Field. Ohio State would likely have to go to Indy.

Penn state I believe it under going $100 million upgrades to accommodate potential cold weather games.

Also, if you are Ohio State and you are staring at potential weather similar to the Drake game you 100% want it moved. The stakes are way too high and too much money at risk if you lose playing in slop

Unfortunately they likely would make us “host” at US Bank due to the “threat” of inclimate weather.
No they wouldn’t. Unless there was a serious threat. We literally played in a snow game last year, elements are part of the game.
