Coaching Search: Place your bets

The problem is I don’t think people here are the majority of the fans. I think most casual fans would be thrilled with TJ.

UNLV is like Texas. They have a bunch of rich entitled donors who think they should be better than they are. They haven’t made the tournament since 2013. They just aren’t that much better than the rest of their conference. TJ had them second in the conference last year and people think he’s the worst coach in the conference. What they think plays no factor in what we should think.
UNLV and Texas have tremendous advantages over many of their conference peers.

Texas SHOULD be better than they are. They should, and have, more talent.

Very ugly game. It’s Prohm ball vs Prohm ball. Pass on both coaches.
Just admit you have no idea what you are talking about. This is just nothing like Prohms high ball screen offense.

They both have culture issues that prevent them from using those advantages. Those advantages also aren’t that big of a deal anymore. Smaller schools can pay competitive wages. Access to tv is equal across the board in conferences.

Umm, look at their recruiting. They still have an advantage. TJ recruiting well there means little. The same coach is likely to win more at UT than nearly any other Big 12 program.

No one brought up pay, but we’re talking about talent, and so paying players is in theory not legal. But their ability to pay still gets them be coaches. Prohm lost his best assistant to UT

Only had this game on for a couple minutes. Three excellent Utah State possessions, and one "oh, duh."
Overall, they have purpose and they know what they're trying to do.

3/4 of doing well with a bunch of people without a frontal lobe isn't too bad.

My 'oh, duh' moments were likely very much the higher percentage at that age.

My bad. He left after one season. Either way, does nothing to move the needle especially since he only lasted a year there.

I don't think he is the guy we are looking for but we could do much worse.

He is probably the best coach in the Mountain West. Hanging right with Utah State and SDSU with a much less heralded group of players. They have an exciting brand of basketball going.

I would take him over Smith and Devries.

The issue is much more of a systematic shift than this issue.

When the Utah States or Nevada’s can hire good coaches too the UNLVs aren’t at so much of an advantage.

Same concept but when good players can go to the smaller schools in conference and still get the same exposure that shifts the balance. The other schools can now get good players too.

It’s as Breece Hall said 5 star culture vs 5 star talent. Look at the Dave Rice years at UNLV. They got a ton of talent but they weren’t a team. UNLV fans and boosters still think they can just out resource people and win. Fixing that is something they don’t give anyone time to do.

My bet: JP will subtly (or not) say something in pressor that acknowledges thoughts/feelings this board has expressed

Also, there will be lots on here with unconfirmed "we interviewed....." stories that'll become future truths to justify/confirm ones own hopes/frustrations

And TJ just pulled a Prohm and called a TO after UNLV made a 3...

Between that and Craig Smith's chapstick, I'm going to need an emotional support beer watching this game.
