Coaching Search: Place your bets

Anyone care to summarize this article from Travis?

What is the norm?
Larry Eustacey- minimal P5 experience and none the 12 years before coming to ISU.
Tim Floyd - ZERO P5 experience
Greg McDermott -ZERO P5 coaching experience
Fred Hoiberg - Zero P5 coaching experience.

There may be a normal path, but there are just as many exceptions. Every AD hiring a Head Coach is trying to catch lightning in a bottle. So hiring the right coach is a long shot and not a sure thing.

Using your Tech example. After firing Pat Knight (who Beard worked for), Kirby Holcum hired Billy Gillispie, Walker and Tubby Smith before finally getting it right in bringing back Beard.
The norm in this conference is to hire someone with P5 experience, and/or often with previous connections to the program. Previous P5 experience isn’t sufficient, but is generally requisite. No, there aren’t just as many exceptions to that. A vast majority of our conference peers hire guys with high major experience, if not prior experience as a HM HC.

Floyd and LE were over 20 years ago and in a different era. We’re an outlier with Jamie, although Hoiberg had the aforementioned prior connections. Prohm was a June Plan D candidate that doesn’t fit with the criteria of our peers, and in which red flags were ignored for the sake of some false notion of fit. The other ones like McD ( and Floyd and Larry if you choose to go back decades before huge TV money), had demonstrated more than inherited wealth, all building programs.

It would be ginormous, however I’m not sure Fred cares about coaching in the NBA anymore. I also don’t think he wants to go anywhere besides ISU. At this point it’s not about the $ for him.
If everything you said is true then this should be an easy decision.

I mean it isn't some sort of huge defense, but just talks about how that 2019 was really good and then according to guys like Fracilla, some guys kind of didn't know how to handle things. And Fran brings up how good things could have been the next year if THT had come back to go in the first round and if Lindell had come back.

Thanks for the synopsis!

TJ had “no comment” when asked about him being on our list to replace Steve.

Am I surprised he didn’t at least use an ambiguous comment as a means of a non-denial? Yes

Agree, I would think a statement along the non denial front would be better, he has to know he would be asked this at some point.

I'd assume 100% if vaccinations keep rolling or even pick up their pace.
I agree. I got round 1 of pfizer last week. I drove out of state to get it but capacity is coming online very quickly.

Groundbreaking stuff

Yea, if he really is able to get Altman and settles for TJ that would be sad and pathetic.

Somehow I hope none of us allow ourselves to feel like we 'settled'. Don't want to go there. Hopefully TJ proves that wrong.

He’s a straight shooter with Big 12 head coach material written all over him. TJ wants to be here. A lot of people have that on their list of “wants”.
