Coach Prohm Gets Extension

Woo we got the Paul Rhoads of the hard wood till 2025. Lowering expectation meter drastically.

New settings calibrated at 5th place in the conference, first round NCAA tourney loss, with 60% likelihood of bubble team.

Hilton attendance down roughly 3% APY

Frustration of inbounds plays, offensive execution, and off court drama up roughly 10% APY.

Going to be a great half decade guys.

Says the guy with the moniker BringBackJohnny. In case you forgot, here's Johnny's ISU records:

Losing conference record and averaged 5th place in the conference. I think too many ISU fans have too big of a head when it comes to ISU basketball. We were really bad for most of our history and have only seen consistent success over the last 8 years. Steve is doing a fine job.

Depends what the expectations are. Is just making the tournament enough? We should aspire to accomplish more than that.

Georges' senior year we should could/should have done better than Sweet Sixteen. Monte's senior year we could/should have done better than 2nd round exit. Those two teams were LOADED. Last year sucked. This year we were a great weekend in KC away from being pretty disappointed overall.

I'm glad we kept Prohm because the continuity is nice and I'd rather than him than TJ Otzelberger but we definitely have room for improvement going forward.

I look at it this way - just get to the tournament then whatever happens happens.

You are right. I will admit I have probably rode to high of standards for the program since about Monte's 2nd season. Its been a hard fall back to reality. I just have to deflated feeling like I did during the Greg McDermott years though. Been tough to shake.

Your argument lost all credibility when you compared this to the McDermott era.

From what I’ve seen it’s only a 3 year extension. Not exactly long term if you ask me. He will still have to prove himself a bit, but I don’t see this thing Morganing out of control spinning off into a Mcdermotting. So if he is not able to improve but remains consistent we are looking at mid-Big12/NCAA year in and year out and can revisit in 3 years...

The contract extension carries him through to June, 2025. That's six years from this coming June.

Continuity is good. The way he represents the university is nice. But his main job is to coach. I'm just not convinced he's worth a 6-year extension with what we know. Would've liked to see how we perform next year first.

If we have a roster of Lard, Wigginton, THT, Solo, Jacobsen, Haliburton and Conditt back, the expectation needs to be higher than 23-12 and fifth in Big12. If the university is going to invest in continuity, I'd like to see our coach show continuity in the way our roster plays. Consistent effort, players held accountable in-game, strategic development. He's a high-major recruiter and a high school level strategist. That works at the mid-major level. But in one of the best conferences with lots of great coaches, that's a shaky formula. He needs to improve, and I don't think we needed to commit to such a lengthy thing without getting another season of information. It sounds like SP is a good life coach. But he has a lot of growing to do to become a good game coach.

If those thoughts make me a "hater" and not a concerned fan that hasn't seen in-game ability from a COACH, so be it. I foresee a lot of *dislike* coming but few/no rebuttals.

I do think next year will be a "prove it" year for Prohm.

Whether LW and THT come back or not. If they do, great, expectations will be high and it'll be his job to prove that. If they don't, thats fine, it'll take a great coaching effort on his part. If they don't come back, I think we have pieces to be competitive.

Talent gets you to the tourney, in the tourney where everyone is talented it comes down to coaching. I like the guy and if he's staying here, I'd rather have him locked up for recruiting purposes but now he needs to prove he can win those close games in the tourney that come down to X's and O's. That's the biggest thing that separates him from the great coaches in our league and around the country right now.

A good coach that wants to be here. Those have been hard to find in the history of this university. We now have three of them in football and mens and women's basketball. For those of you that can't see how good things actually are in our athletic department, I don't know what to tell you.

This is fair, I don't necessarily agree, however I understand where you are coming from. It's good to want more. I haven't seen his buyout, and hopefully it's not "Fran like". In the next couple of years if the bar isn't raised then his seat should get hot. In the mean time, we are showing recruits that we are committed to him, we just won a tournament title, we have some nice players in the program, and we are ready to take a big step forward.
