This is why some of the absolute meltdown is bizarre. Like TJ obviously needs to grow as a coach and if you watch the rest of the league he needs to upgrade talent. He also is coaching in an absolutely killer conference with tons of super accomplished coaches. I have my concerns but I'd like to give the guy a couple years before I crucify him.
I agree with everything in this post but hiring a guy who isn't ready to be a p6 coach is an odd out considering we didn't interview anyone else. It's not like the caliber of coaching in the big 12 was an unknown 10 months ago. I'd sort of expect TJ to be a sure thing since he was treated like one in the process.

I’m pretty much there as well.

What kind of hard hitting questions are people wanting?
Ok, I’ll give it a shot:

TJ, Starting from the beginning of this season going into the beginning of conference play your team was playing excellent. not only that, they looked like a well coached team. And almost like a light switch everything changed. The team was discombobulated and the head coach looks like he should be coaching high school girl’s basketball. Can you specifically explain this unfortunate transformation?

Why should he/CF get credentials then? If that’s what you think of CF - then you should also agree that they shouldn’t get access.

Ok, take his credentials away. I do not give two *****. This site is entertainment for me to converse with others about what's going on with Iowa State athletics.

Sure but honestly not sure who else you could've got to come take over the disaster of a program we had last year.

Paying someone 3 million dollars is a pretty powerful incentive. Yes i know tj is making half that.

I actually like Otz's recruiting strategy. The three guys coming in next year will likely be 4 year players that have upside; get those guys and sprinkle in a good grad transfer every year. But he has to prove he's good on the X's and O's part of the job.

Can they shoot?

This thread has gone off the rails… I think the OP said something along the lines of Chris should ask some questions about the MBB Team and if he can’t… he should step away and let someone else…

Now I’m seeing post about if TJ is a good coach, what’s going to happen in 2/3 years, it’s TJ’s 1st year, and maybe getting a 5 star recruit. (I got caught up in it as well)…

But why can’t CW or CF ask tough questions? I really haven’t seen any post about that.

Or:

TJ, why do you have a tendency to take players out of the game when they seem to be getting into a rhythm? For example, after Kunc’s hot start he was inexplicably taken out of the game, and didn’t hit another shot until late in the first half.

CF is usually good for some dumb straw man arguments, but this one takes the cake.

Somehow the roster had enough talent to go 13-0 in non-con. There’s not a team in the Valley sniffing that. Hell, an MVC all-star team isn’t running the table with ISUs non-con.

And literally zero people suggested that ISU should win the conference. Most would be perfectly happy with just not epically collapsing.

You have to be realistic on what happened in the non-con. Freemantle didn't play in the Xavier game. Memphis was completely lost in the woods until 5 days ago. Creighton lost all 5 starters from last year's team. Iowa State was the first legitimately good team that Iowa had seen to that point. All great wins but those games are much different if played now.

TJ brought in a bunch of older guys that were excited to have a new chance and a new look at the game. They bought in, with no depth mind you, to a defensive system that takes an insane amount of energy that flustered and wore down teams that hadn't found themselves yet. This team was going to hit a wall at some point and now they're in a stretch where they're playing older teams that have multitudes more talent. What's happening isn't unexpected.

If the same thing is happening three years from now, sure, pile on and talk about underachieving. Just getting this team to even be in the conversation at this point is nothing but a huge win.

I think Watson has the reputation as a shooter. I think King is decent at it. Lipsey is more of a swiss army knife - will stuff the stat sheet but not necessarily be dominant at one aspect of his game, except maybe defense.

I think we have the answer. Chris thinks TJ is Tom Izzo.

I’m supposed to believe that people would be overjoyed with the Cleveland State coach even if we were 7-18 at this point but showing improvement.

Porter Moser is allegedly an elite HC. They have Goldwire (Duke transfer), Groves and two returning starters from the prior squad-NCAA Tournament team. He is 14-11 and 4-8 in the conference to this point. Do we have more talent than Oklahoma?
