I didn’t say T.J. was the best coach. But he is certainly better than the one that drove the program into the ground.
So is Gilberts high school varsity boys coach. That doesn’t mean we all should be happy cause at least Otz is better than that.

When it comes to Iowa State Athletics I don't really expect anyone local to ask hard hitting questions. But especially not a publisher of a fan message board.

I guess I will just say I doubt a single other P6 job opening had TJ very high on their list following last season. I get that Iowa State is "different" (actually I don't think so) but whatever. He's here and smashed expectations early, and has disappointed lately. Snowball's chance in hell he doesn't get at least 4 years to prove if he's capable if not 5, so let's just hope he does get it done long term.

He automatically gets four years because of what he walked into.

He gets as many as he wants if he’s successful

The real question will be if we’re seeing the same things in years 3 and 4 when he has all his guys

Perhaps we should give him at least two years to overcome the moves made by the Gilbert High HC over the last half a decade.

Funny how that works. And to the 4-5 people that have a hard on for CW if you hate the product so much then why don’t you just ******* leave.

Isn’t that cancel culture? I don’t stand for that.

I’d think people would rather help improve the content/conversations.

Just basic “explain this 5 on the floor” or “why are we running plays for a 20% 3 point shooter” “whag could you have done better to prevent blowing a 15 point lead at Hilton”

These are good questions...but which player do you want ISU to run 3 point plays for?

And since it seems like CF doesn't want 1/2 the available players playing, dribbling, or shooting, what 5 works the best?

My guess is in 3 or 4 years we will have a pretty talented roster. Likely Top 5 talent wise in the Big 12. I have no doubt TJ can bring in 4 star recruits and maybe a 5 star eventually. What happens with that is to be seen.

He also has called games and has several radio gigs, it’s not like he just runs a little fan website

Being an ******* isn’t improving anything. Acting like petulant children is what this little band is doing tonight.

I actually like Otz's recruiting strategy. The three guys coming in next year will likely be 4 year players that have upside; get those guys and sprinkle in a good grad transfer every year. But he has to prove he's good on the X's and O's part of the job.

Honestly, if a coach can't take a 2-22 program, tear it down, build a roster in two months that wouldn't be the most talented in the Missouri Valley and win the Big 12 outright I don't think he was a very good hire...
It’d be one thing if we were competing and playing good basketball, but falling short in games, but we aren’t for the most part anymore. Context never matters for some though.

This is why some of the absolute meltdown is bizarre. Like TJ obviously needs to grow as a coach and if you watch the rest of the league he needs to upgrade talent. He also is coaching in an absolutely killer conference with tons of super accomplished coaches. I have my concerns but I'd like to give the guy a couple years before I crucify him.

CF is usually good for some dumb straw man arguments, but this one takes the cake.

Somehow the roster had enough talent to go 13-0 in non-con. There’s not a team in the Valley sniffing that. Hell, an MVC all-star team isn’t running the table with ISUs non-con.

And literally zero people suggested that ISU should win the conference. Most would be perfectly happy with just not epically collapsing.

Here's my take on this, as something of an amateur journalism junkie.

I don't have a huge problem with CW's relationship to TJ. He's been quite public and frank about how it affects his objectivity. When it's been bad, he's said it's bad. Fair enough.

That said, this is a fan site built on access to and relationships with people in the athletic department. You'll get acknowledgement that things aren't going well but actual criticism or accountability will be fairly sparse.

But that's sports media in 2022. Even traditional hardcore journalism outlets like the Register have figured out that it's bad for business to antagonize fans. Kirk Ferentz had dozens of his own players accuse him of running a racist program and (to my knowledge) not one journalist in Iowa called for his resignation, even though almost no other coach in college football would have survived a scandal like that.

It's nice to see what you're thinking and feeling reflected by the people in media you trust and respect, but in this day and age that's increasingly unlikely.

We’ve had 20+ plus games in the prior two years in which we lost by double digits. We have spent three of the last 4 years being completely non-competitive. The last 4 games have sucked but I haven’t seen a 20-40 point trouncing either. We saw more than a handful of those in the last 2 years.

So what is the context for the first 35 minutes of the game today?
