Chicago Deep Dish Pizza

Pequods. It's what Chicago residents prefer.
^^ This if you’re willing to venture a little ways north.
^^ This is a great option and they have a location easy walking distance from McCormick.

Flo & Santos is another close to McCormick. They don’t do deep dish, but their tavern style is really good. You probably won’t find it on any lists, but it was one of my favorites when I lived in the South Loop.

Looks like the pizza is covered.

Slightly off topic, but if you are round that area and want something Chicago authentic, head to Ricobene’s on 26th street. Order a breaded steak. It has been a few years since I was there. But I will never forget that place or how good that sandwich is. The fries are good too!!

Pequods is probably the best deep dish. But Lou Malnatis is much easier to get and nearly as good IMHO.

I think this is probably the best take. Frankly Giordanos, Gino’s, and Unos are all great as well. My favorite of those is Lou Malnati’s, but it’s close and atmosphere/service can make one Lou’s worse than any of them. My favorite Lou’s locations are probably the Gold Coast and South Loop locations.

Oh, and don’t make the mistake of thinking a Giordano’s in West Des Moines (or Orlando…or anywhere else for that matter) is going to be like a Chicago location. I hate to sound like a pizza snob, but it’s honestly not going to be close to the same. It has to be the ingredients they are able to get there hands on or something, but any of these non-Chicago deep dish locations are just a cheap knockoff of the real thing.

Get some deep dish pizza, a hot dog, and an Italian beef sandwich while your there…and grab a bag of Garrett’s popcorn either while walking around or for the road. Nobody does food like Chicago.

My best suggestion would be to skip the deep dish and got straight for the tavern style. That’s kind of pizza Chicagoans eat, not deep dish.
Actual Chicago style sucks. I want a meal, not a cracker that's about as filling as a Lunchables.

We're headed to Chicago next weekend. We'll be in the McCormink area. Can I get some recommendations for Chicago deep dish pizza close to that area?
Ginos East! This was the first Chicago pizza I ever had, and it was awesome!

Tavern style is thin crust that’s usually cut into squares.
Yes, and I disagree that this is the type of pizza Chicagoans eat. Might be a preferred option for sitting in a bar watching a game with a bunch of friends, and in general isn’t a bad option…but it’s not better and certainly isn’t what I would recommend to someone coming into town to try Chicago-style pizza.

Let me throw in Art of Pizza as a different option than the classics.
Art of Pizza has the best pizza in the city. Way better than any of the chains. They have a downtown location, but I’ve never been to that one. Pequods is second, but it’s a pretty different style to Art of Pizza. Pequods is way saucier and has the burnt edge.

I lived in Chicago for 10 years, and ate a ton of that square. Cut thin crust, but never heard it called tavern style once. It's basically that that's what most bars serve for pizza, but I don't think that's that different than most bars anywhere.

Gino's East deep dish with a solid layer of sausage. No sprinkles like Giordano's. Get the full slab!

I live two blocks away from the downtown location. It's dangerous.

Gino's East was the best I had but that was decades ago. If people still rank it near the top that says a lot about the place.
