My wife and I have had 1-3 dogs for 30 years. When we put our last dog down 2 years ago we got a cat. First, we got very lucky as we got a 1 year old rescue cat so we did not have to go through the kitten stage.

On major difference is you can go away for 2-3 days and not have to worry about your pet with a cat.
Other than that you have to deal with poop, feeding, vet bills, etc. in either case.

I ****** hate small dogs but I don't think terriers count. They have big heads/brains and were breed to kill things. They can be awesome in the hands of a competent trainer.

I'd agree. My parents had a Yorkie and a Norfolk (Norwich?) terrier when we were younger. They were great dogs. I don't think they were yippers at all. It's all about how they are trained. The norfolk had a tendency to catch mice and bring them to my mom (who hates rodents).

Coworker has a miniature golden doodle (all 15 lbs of it) that runs around our office and is the most chill dog I've ever met. Not a yipper at all.

Which do you prefer? Little yip yip dogs or cats?

I'm a dog guy, but in this case prefer cats to annoying little dogs.

How small are we talking? My wife had a Shiba when we met and while they need a little attention daily, the maintenance need is only a vacuum. Plus, you don't have to have a cat.

Have a cat, I'd much rather have that over a small dog. So much lower maintenance.

If I got a dog it'd need to be a medium to large dog.

Thought I was going to open this thread and see fight videos. Disappointed, to say the least.
Better?

Have a 40 lb Dalmatian and a 100 lb lab. Wouldnt trade them for anything (most days).

Although, I think 40 lbs is the perfect size. Big enough to not be embarrassed when walking it outside, but small enough it doesnt break or knock down **** in the house.

I have a Bichon/Maltese mix. He doesn't bark excessively. He's smart as a whip and never has accidents. He's 14 lbs. The thing about some small dogs, like mine, is they don't KNOW they're small dogs. He thinks he's big time.

Dogs are companions. Cats are accessories.

Our Maltese rarely barked, although we also had a Lhasa Apso and any time Lhasa barked, Maltese did, maybe as some kind of reactive thing. And apsos will bark at the drop of a hat.

Neither. Both of them annoy the **** out of me.

My ex had two cats that ruined absolutely everything I owned. My in laws have small dogs and I can’t stand them.

Big dogs FTW. He’s a 100 lb golden retriever mastiff mix that barks maybe once or twice a week. Yip dogs suck.

Like I get not liking a dog that is annoying and constantly barking but most small dogs aren’t that way in my experience. We had a Jack Russell Terrier and a cat and I liked the dog a lot more. Dogs want to be with you and cats are more roommates.
This. The small dog thing is overblown, or I should say the annoying traits that people apply to small dogs apply to pretty much all dogs. They can be every bit as loud and annoying as small dogs. I have a Retriever/Lab mix and a Boston and both are pretty quiet dogs in general, so I'm lucky there. I go running through my neighborhood and there are a TON of big dogs going nuts and barking at every person that walks by and every car that drives by.

I think that's a lab thing, though. They tend to be little aloof, and their big, dense and constantly wagging tail operates independently of their brain. We've had several 100lb German shepherds, and none were ever as clumsy as any of the labs I've met. Clumsy isn't the right word... They just aren't aware of where there body is relative to the rest of the world.

We had a miniature Dachshund (lived to 17, just had to put him down a month ago). Wife and I both decided years ago that we won't get another small dog. I hate cats, because they can be ********. I don't need more ungrateful ******** in my life.

Rabbits are actually super cool pets. I'd get another rabbit in a heartbeat. Tons of personality, cuddly, quite, don't smell (they make the house smell like hay which I like), can be litter trained (and their poop is just hard pellets anyway).
