There's some thought that Grill wants to stay closer to home. That actually makes a lot of sense if you consider his previous offers and the fact he chose to play for TJ. Now, he's visiting schools that border KS. We'd be super fortunate to get him in the fold.

I thought he went to HS in Kansas.

That would be good for us. I mean we are closer to his home than where he signed originally so this would work great for him. Closer to home, bigger conference. I like it. Hopefully he is good. Something tells me he won't contribute much his freshman year but will be a great 4 year guy.

I just hope he has the Midwest work ethic.

No kidding. Don't get me wrong, I was impressed he made every shot in the video. That takes talent.

I love how all white guys hustle, Work hard, Scrap, are gym rats if they can shoot. What else am I missing. There are so many stupid ones about white players it funny as hell. I am just waiting for someone to compare him to Clayton Custer. You know since Clayton is white also. haha.

I’m pretty sure he had an offer from tech before committing to TJ.

That is correct. He received Nebraska, Texas Tech and SMU offers during the July live period before committing to South Dakota State in early August. It got a lot of national attention when TJ landed him. I'll link Bossi's tweet below but Gary Parrish and Goodman were among others who acknowledged it.

As some have mentioned, it's worth noting that he's an all-state 3 sport athlete (Basketball, Football - QB, and Track - High jumper). He recently went 6'7" in the high jump. For reference, last year's state of Iowa 4A high jump champion went 6'8".

That hasn’t really been the narrative though. Mostly people talking about his quick release and athletic ability. I did read that he’s the son of a coach, like Lewis.

He is from a smaller school in Kansas. The references and comparisons to Frankamp or even Custer are natural. He’s clearly a different type of player than Custer, and longer than both. He’s probably too short to be great compared to Haluska, but dunking like that against small school competition reminds me of watching Haluska when he was at Carroll. Maybe we can get lucky this is our Hinrich

Seems like more of a shooting guard or combo to me than a point guard so don't see any reason they couldn't go after both him and the French Revolution.

Agree. I see him as more of an off-ball guard. Tough to tell what his decision making is like from a highlight tape but his handle has a ways to go. Physically, he's obviously an athletic freak already but his frame definitely still has some filling out to do.

Mooney is the same height (6'3") for those making that comp but Mooney does possess a +6 inch wingspan which he's great at utilizing on defense. Grill probably has a higher shooting ceiling and better athleticism than a guy like that but the hope would be that some of Mooney's defensive skills and toughness traits are also picked up in his game.

Agree. It would be great to again have multiple primary ball handler types that can also shoot.

For a program that likes small ball and 4 guard lineups, there is room for a mix of 4 pg/combo guards when at least 3 of them can shoot and one is long like Haliburton.

Video looked really good. Not sure about the competition though. Definitely has a nice shot and athleticism.

His handle reminds me of watching Naz when he was listed as a “pg recruit”. To be “the pg” it needs tightening.

With his dunks, I’d be surprised if he didn’t have a plus wingspan or standing reach. Maybe not +6 like Mooney, but he’d be crazy athletic to dunk like that and be a short 6’2”/6’3” imo. For reference, another comparison in Hinrich measured at 6’2.75” without shoes (6’3.75” with shoes) with a 6’6” wingspan and 8’2.5” standing reach.

Kid has good video. Quick off the floor. Some issues with his feet positioning at the base of his shot. Quick release on his jumper. Clearly the best athletic in many of his games but a little bit of Tyler Herro’s game if you ask me.

Reminds me a lot of Grayson Allen, hopefully minus the douche. Not quite as refined or as good of a handle yet, but it feels like a good comp.
