Caleb Grill with 24 for UNLV

Even if the team chemistry is much improved, it hasn’t translated to wins.

I'm personally comfortable taking a longer view. Chemistry, good players, development then consistent wins. Like the CMC model but in basketball. I have way more fun watching kids develop and the team form and gel than the other stuff. Mostly because I came from a career with little good leadership, lots of egos and substandard performance because of those issues.

Haliburton (JR)
Wigginton (SR)
Bolton (JR)
Horton-Tucker (JR)
Lard (SR)

Assuming above that Lard was not a "problem child" and worked out well. He had way higher of a ceiling than Solomon, obviously, so I figure might as well slot him in at the 5 there.

That team above would be good. It might still be mediocre on defense, but **** it would score.

Bolton is still here. Who'd replace him from the departed players list?

You been asleep for the past 10 years? Not familiar with CBB much?

Haliburton, Wigginton, Horton-Tucker, and Lard are the four guys we have seen leave early in the past few years who would still have eligibility left and the ability/talent at least play a lot if not start.

Other early departures (e.g., Lewis and Griffin) were not any better than any of our other current options.

Putting those four together with our existing roster... I still think Bolton is our best player right now otherwise, he was certainly our second-best player last year, and he would fit as a small guard next to Haliburton and Horton-Tucker as big guards... so I plucked him off the present roster to be the fifth starter with them.

It is all just a hypothetical, after all. :)

It is an open question if Bolton (or Coleman-Lands) and a few others end up in Ames if they would be stuck behind those other four guys, though. Bolton did not commit until after Wigginton hired an agent.

Anyways, if Tyrese, Lindell, Talen, and Cam stuck around, like the generation built around Niang, Mitrou-Long, Morris, and Thomas did, we would have a pretty bangin' team right now, like we did back then.

I have always wondered why we didn’t keep Grill around. At worst he would have been better than Terrance Lewis, at best likely a gritty kid that could play tough defense and knock down a shot or 2 when he came in. Not a bad end of bench to have on the team. If he developed into more than that great. Seems like he has improved.

Don't be naive. He was a fan favorite before he took one step on campus. Time to get over this kid.

You were probably one of the dudes bashing this kid during the season last year. Or maybe you were one of the guys that thought he wasn't worthy of a late scholarship offer. I think he would have been a good Cyclone for the next 3 years, but I don't blame him for leaving. He obviously didn't think ISU was a good fit.

He scored 6 last night against a Davidson.
Kid always played hard, just could not throw it in the ocean. Probably best for him to get a fresh start. Wish him well.

I legit don't know, but Grill seemed like one that got away more so than we showed him the door.

I wasn't bashing him ever, just don't know why he deserved the hype he received. The kid competed at what would the equivalent level of 3A in Iowa HS hoops in KS, and he struggled every time he stepped on to the court. There were some that saw the potential that was buried deep, and I would consider myself among that group. Toward the end of the season and dating up to his transfer, the general consensus on here--aside from the sunshine pumpers--seemed to be that he could be a good 4 year player as a 6th man/spot starter once he reached his peak, probably junior/senior. I don't think that's the type of player to get worked up over personally. Steven can recruit better. That 19 class was putrid by our standards.

It sounded like they wanted to keep him, but he wanted to play for TJ.

I think he saw that he would be behind Bolton and Jackson for sure for a couple years and I think he wanted to play in TJ's offense as opposed to Prohm's.
