Another home/deck construction bump.
Been looking at replacement decking for front porch and landing, either this fall yet or next spring. Its 18" OC so pretty much ruled out composite deck since I am not going to restructure the whole thing to hit 12" OC. Choices were down to IPE, 2x6 red cedar or2x6 premium treated (kiln dried for real). Price range from super expensive, to really expensive to just regular expensive. Not sure whether to order the sticks this fall and store them or wait till spring to order.
Ruled out the Ipe, pretty hard to work with and I haven't used it before. Down to the 2x6 options, still mulling it over. The treated is stained a dark brown which I don't like much but it's more a surface stain, not part of the pressure treatment so will likely fade enough to power wash off in a couple of years to go lighter or gray stain. Will have to ask the dudes at the lumber yard (real yard, not a box store). I bit leery of the red cedar. Quality isn't what it used to be and the stuff locally sourced and available here is a choice between half ass wet sticks to the dry sticks at HD or Lowes. The HS/Lowes stuff is dry but half sap wood and won't last for **** on my shaded porch deck landing.
Worst case scenario is I start peeling the old redwood deck up and the structure (treated) has deteriorated. Ground level landing and steps/porch are enclosed with stucco walls so can't really know till I deconstruct.
