Buffalo Bills Damar Hamlin

Cleaning it up. No politics, no vaccine talk here please. Any more and people will start getting banned. Please let's not do that.

If anyone sees anymore, please report it.

Side note - and maybe this belongs in the Site Feedback forum, but I tried to report a post and the button (on mobile) would not work after I typed my reasoning and tried to submit.

I still have issues with quoting on mobile - have to hit a very select spot on the button for it to work.

You usually need a smaller object causing the impact like a baseball or a fist. Those sports it’s more common (although very rare still) because there aren’t pads to disperse the force of the impact. This is very unusual for football.
@FriendlySpartan I happened to, unfortunately perhaps, catch a replay on social. It appears Hamlin "absorbed" the energy of the tackle into his chest. (Higgins was running, he was stopped by Hamlin's chest suddenly, with Higgins helmet right at Hamlin's chest level) Might the helmet have been the impetus?

I don't think Sioux Falls as a Level 1. Omaha has 2.
If you're in NW Iowa you have quite a trip.
There is a HUGE gap in the west.

When we took a 2 week road trip from Minneapolis to Cannon Beach, OR, we spent a night in Billings and saw that the hospital was working on becoming a lvl 1 center.

It doesn't seem to show Des Moines on the map, but it clearly has a Level 1. Not sure when that happened though, the map might be out of date.

Obviously it feels like being deprived of oxygen is the main concern here. You're a physician, at what point do you start to get into the significant brain damage area time-wise?
So I didn’t watch this live I had some friends messaging me to turn it on and I had no idea he was down for as long as he was on the field. Someone asked this question earlier and I said I wouldn’t be concerned about it but knowing now how long he was down and needed multiple AED shocks brain damage is a major concern.

From what I have seen reported he was bagged, given cpr, and had the AED used which are good but if the heart was stopped for that long oxygen wasn’t being circulated properly. I’m not going to hazard a guess with the limited information but if he survives some form of damage is more likely then not.

Was in Iowa this past week.

Heard 'it is what it is' maybe 26 times in response to things that are navigable with better responses.
None of the doctors at our county seat hospital will deliver babies and place blame on malpractice insurance. No problem in neighboring county seat hospital that is smaller, if you can get there. I delivered last kid in elevator in Des Moines hospital.

Yeah I’m sure it probably was but between the size of the helmet and the pads this is a very rare event. Things had to have lined up perfectly for this to happen, a slightly different angle or even a fraction of a second later and this is almost likely a normal play.

Oregon has 2 level 1 trauma centers, both in Portland. Like was said, large gaps in the West.

Mayo choppers come to Albert Lea often. Got the ride myself.
Hoping Damar makes it.

I’ve got a relative that works for Owatonna fire and a couple more that work for the Owatonna hospital. The most interesting thing I’ve heard about the Mayo choppers is that they won’t go out if conditions suck. They call the wild ex military pilots from Faribolt to do it instead.

Over 1.1 million now. Incredible how quick it took off.

Bills mafia strikes again. They might be getting a little help from the outside, but they often give huge amounts to players charities.
Not to belittle this giving, only to highlight this isn't their first time putting a very humbling amount of money down to support causes dear to players, not necessarily on their team.

I think I read an article once about some these remotes Western areas have a private service people can pay ahead of time to be flown to Level 1 facility should they need it.

Since the previous post got deleted, as a heads up I’m an emergency physician
Respect! And thanks for the info.

I've only skimmed a few pages on this thread.

We all hope the guy makes a full recovery!! It sounds like he is in good hands now, and they are running more tests.

This is so sad and shocking to see. I am very hopeful that he pulls through and has a full recovery. It’s a miracle that they reacted so fast and effectively. I don’t think anyone was prepared to decide on resuming. I am glad that the players and coaches did the right thing. I bet he will appreciate that along with everything else that was done to help him.

The first year I was an NFL fan (10 years old), a player on the Lions died from a heart attack on the field. Chuck Hughes. The team wore black arm bands the rest of the season. I think they actually finished playing that game that day. The rest of the year was in honor of him every game. I was dumbfounded being so young.

There are life flight type subscriptions because of the remote nature, can’t remember what we pay but it’s not a ton.

Have to say I thought the primary difference between level 1 and level 2 was being a teaching facility.
