Breaking down the UNI Panthers

I'll put together a full breakdown on UNI at some point this week for everybody.

The difference between this game being 31-14 or 42-6 lies solely in whether UNI is anywhere near competent offensively. The UNI defense is legit, as always, but fewer scholarships means less depth (obviously) and they can't be on the field for 40 minutes.

UNI is really, really good in the front 6/7 including the Valley DPOY at DT, two All American linebackers (though one will be limited after shoulder surgery) and lots of experience at DE. If Iowa State can consistently run the ball, I'd be really encouraged for what the season can be.

This won't be 2019 but it's not a total blowout either. Two and a half competitive quarters and a nice tune-up for Iowa State.
Nope 77-0

I don't think they will score a TD on our starters barring a bad mental breakdown from someone. Their offense is pretty bad. Decent defense that I'm guessing we start a little slow against just going against someone other than ourselves for the first time. 17-3 at half. 41-13 final with a late UNI score against the backups to break double digits

I'll say this about UNI. They are not Kansas. I'd typically say they're around the caliber of the 9th best Big 12 team. Maybe slightly worse, but they are not Kansas. That means they're a team we COULD blow out, but more often then not, it'll be a fairly close game with Iowa State hopefully pulling away in the 2nd half.

This year, if we are truly a top 10 team, which I think we are, we should blow them out.

I will believe it will be a 3 point game until proven otherwise
This is where I'm at. Ready for the Cyclones to just turn it on and roll - but I gotta see it in an early season game before I'll predict it.

34 to 10 in a fairly boring game.

Unless UNI turns in over like it's their job and Heacock's D scores, then it could get ugly.

I attended a few UNI games in person last year. They were not good. The QB situation is a mess. McElvain is not accurate. Farley wants him to run. Good luck.

Campbell might prefer to get into ball control mode, but I think for the first time, he really cares about the non-conference schedule. I think he is looking for the first 3 games to be statements for a national audience. Our opportunity to be in the Playoffs may depend on getting bumped up a few more spots in the rankings early in the season. Just winning against our non-conference opponents won't be enough. We have to win big and others have to lose. If we don't look impressive, we might drop.

Also, he can afford to do so this year because he is starting so far ahead with so many returning players. No need to have a slow rollout of the playbook.

UNI won't score unless Campbell puts me and my friends in!

This may be the don’t show too much before Iowa, but with all of our returners I do not know why they wouldn’t already have film on what to expect. So I expect us to win comfortably. Will be interested in seeing our adjustments in our defensive line play (expect to see different emphasis from a year ago there).

Agree....they are a sound team, usually have some swagger, and play with nothing to lose.

I have said the exact same thing.....as a top 10 team, I'm ok with a competitive 1st quarter/dusting the rust off....but by the third quarter it should feel over.....not Brock landing on a fumble in the last seconds to save a win, lol

I agree with all of this. UNI’s offense really struggled last year and I think that continues unless the QB is greatly improved. I also think Campbell wants us to look the part of a Top 10 team and have a ton of confidence going into the Iowa game, so he will try to open it up more than usual.

It’s obvious but I think the biggest challenge UNI will have in this game is stopping the run game. Our two deep at running back will be head and shoulders better than anything they have seen. We didn’t have this run game last time we played. I could see the game looking closer because we get some backups in the second half. 38-14.
