Bowl Game Projections

After the TCU game we bought $180 RT nonstop out of Cedar Rapids to Orlando (which is dirt cheap for Christmas). We figured even if ISU doesn't make it to Orlando, at worst we still have an awesome trip in Florida.

I'll admit, I'm hoping for Memphis, purely because of its proximity. Distance is going to be a big determining factor for me. That's why I'm pulling for Liberty or one of the bowls in Texas. If proximity weren't a factor, I still wouldn't pick Orlando, though. It's just a crappy, overpriced, generic city that is geared for exactly one thing, Disney.

And harry potter land, which I would be going to shamelessly.

Three airline tickets from DSM to Orlando seems to be around $1,500 that get you there a day or so early and the next day home or the next. Doesn't seem to make much of a difference the day or the airline. I was expecting this to be the most affordable flying location.

It’s worth the extra money to be in a good location. We stayed in the Peabody in Memphis.
I agree. I was a broke sophomore in college and stayed at a La Quinta Inn on the wrong side of town with 5 other people. Woke up to gun shots at about 2 am. Family friends stayed at the Peabody and we went to see them before the game. Place was magical.

LSU fans are a blast to tailgate with. If you are matched up with them, make friends with an LSU tailgate and you will be in Cajun heaven. Very generous and know how to party.

Yeah, there were actually a bunch of LSU fans tailgating at the Independence Bowl when ISU played there. And they weren't even playing in the game.

What day do they announce the bowl game teams?
Usually as the conference championship games finish up on December 2nd they'll start announcing bowls one by one. I follow Brett McMurphy on Twitter and he usually is one of the first people to report out when bowl invites are given.

Those tickets will be $1500 a piece after they announce ISU in Orlando.

By law, every airline must offer free cancellation within 24 hours of booking. If you want to go but are waiting for ISU to be selected, book the airfare the morning of December 2nd, wait and see if ISU is selected. If ISU is picked at the bowl you booked, keep the airfare. If not, cancell within 24 hours of your booking. Like others have said, if you wait until after ISU is announced at the bowl, all airfare will skyrocket in price.

Can confirm. We tailgated with some LSU peeps over at the College World Series when it was still at Rosenblatt and they were very welcoming and generous.

does that apply to non-refundable tickets as well? If so, that's a solid strategy

Yes. This applies to all airfare and most airlines allow you to cancel easily online. Note, if you book through American, instead of offering free cancellation, they offer a free 24 hour hold that doesn't require a credit card.

I wonder what bowl the players would prefer? Orlando would be my guess based off the social activities in Orlando compared to some of the other destinations.

Plus, ISU has 16 players from the state of Florida (second only to Iowa)

I could see the family angle being on their wishlist.

But have you ever gone out to the bars in Orlando? It's not like it's a happening place by any stretch of the imagination. I personally would prefer Orlando over Memphis but that's because I have a friend that lives in Memphis and I've been a few times already.

I would take any of the Texas Bowls due to proximity to my home in Dallas too.

I didn't mind Memphis but the weather SUCKED!!! I want to go some where warm, hence why I am pulling for Orlando or Phx.
