Bird Migration and Misc Birding Thread

Usually over 10 pounds of niger seed each year last year was 1/2 a tube all winter. This year 3-4 inches. I even bought fresh last month at a larger store because I thought it was bad. Goldfinches are my favorite especially the later it gets. Not that I like the colors. Maybe I should buy the seed at Wamart they might be used to that seed?

I have no proof , but finches seem to be very thin this year. I’m in Minnesota and I have not seen as much as I have in the past

Going to put out a hummingbird feeder this year for the first time
When should I get it set up (West Des Moines)?

Anyone else seen all the eagles sitting out on the ice by the mile long bridge at Saylorville? I’ve never seen so many in one place. Is this a regular thing this time of year?

My mom said she had 2 red-wing blackbirds this weekend and usually they are 6 weeks from now after the regular blackbirds.

Walmart seed works good for us. They turnover their stuff fast.

I provide a mix that has a variety of bird seed to our winter friends, including cracked corn. During the cold stretches, birds aren’t picky and will eat all I put out. With warmer weather, they don’t eat very much of the cracked corn. Seems like peanuts are the first to go, then suet pellets, then sunflower seeds. Suet cakes are very popular. Saw a red headed for the first time in a while this weekend.

Sandhill cranes are back here in So. Minn. Heard one fly over house this morn, making that prehistoric sounding call.
