He may deserve it, but this is unfortunate for sure. The cubs have avoided arbitration with every player under GM Jim Hendry, hopefully they can do the same here.

if he leaves the cubs i hope the twins pick him up..i am a twins fan 1rst and a cubs fan 2nd...i know im weird...
If you think for a second the Twins would pick up Zambrano you're crazy... they're going to have to save every penny and THEN some just to have a chance to keep Santana after this coming season...
We need to keep Big Z on the Cubs. He's our only somewhat reliable starter......except when he goes on binges of sending e-mails to his brother.......

The comments he made concerns me some. Granted athletes are greedy in nature but he should have been a little better with the way he came across regarding his contract situation. Makes him look like an ungrateful and greedy player that just cares about how much he's getting paid. Aramis Ramirez just gave the Cubs a hometown discount when he could have made millions more by becoming a free agent. Carlos should take note that if you want the best players on your team everyone can't get paid top dollar unless you are the Yankees.
Granted I think he's worth Zito money and hope the Cubs lock him up because he's one of the best pitchers in the game I think. But if the Cubs pay up, the money better not go to his head and the Cubs better get some 20 win seasons out of him to justify the big payday he has coming.
And ditto what JR said, no way the Twins could afford him without dumping payroll of their good players. I could see the 2 New York teams going hard after him though.

Zambrano is good but he still has control issues from time to time and walks alot of batters. I definitely see where he is coming from though. I would be pissed sitting around watching all the people the cubs have signed and all the money they have spent. Hell Ted Lilly is getting 10 million and he hasn't proven anything in the league. Just watch, the Cubs will lose him and he will win 5 Cy Youngs playing somewhere else
If we need extra cash I say the Cubs let go of Woods. He is never healthy and at some point you have to wonder if they'll ever have him for a full season ever again.
Ummm, Wood took a 1 year deal for like 1.75 mil this season. That's pretty cheap even for a reliever which he will be this year. If he stays healthy that is a bargain.
If Wood stays healthing I believe he will make more in incentives than what his contract is worth. But yes, that is cheap for a pitcher.

I say take the middle of the Cubs off er and his arbitration number, multiply it by 6 (13.5x6 = 81 mil) make it an even 80 (discount for getting a long term contract in a place where he's loved) and then work in incentives for Cy Young awards, World Series appearances, World Series MVP, All Star games, etc. That could make the offer worth about $15 mil per year over the whole contract.
That gives him to the Cubs until hes 31, and who knows from there. The Cubs can get that done...and Z couldn't complain!

That's a big IF. I hope and pray that Woods can stay in good shape, but I'm not holding my breath.
