Big 12 statement about rushing field.....

I mean, the letter was fair enough but what's the point of doing this publicly? Can't imagine this couldn't be solved by a conversation between Bowlsby and Pollard.

I don't remember it being "necessary" so much as it was a "preference of our current head coach."

These aren't my concerns anyway, I'm just sharing what Pollard said.
I seem to remember there being "incidents" between the teams when they had to cross each other to go to their locker rooms in the past. Wally Burnham and Geno Smith for one.

I think even though how it is now isn't ideal for a field storming once every 5 games or so, it is probably better than having the teams cross multiple times every game.

It is a reminder to the rest of the league as well.

Bowlsby is watching, always watching...

I think the biggest problem is where the storm occurs. Always starts with the student section which is right on top of the visiting team exit. Just makes it difficult to get the other team off the field. Not sure there’s really a good way to fix it though.

Pretty sure back in the Middle Ages when I was a student we were in the southwest corner. Not sure what we would lose by moving them to southeast corner with opposing band section over to northeast. I guess ability of students to razz them on way to locker room? Maybe some visual thing with TV? Maybe want them engaged with band more?

Back when we had four hillsides, we were sitting on hill by student section and some dumb UNI woman was complaining about the cursing from the student section with her little kids there. I contained the cursing I wanted to blast her with while pointing out she was a moron with four hills to choose from that she picked the one by the student section and not the one by the UNI section. She still didn’t move and just continued to gripe. I think it was the Steel Jantz big comeback game.

Just curious, @isufbcurt why do you disagree with this?

Because in my opinion the student section is in the perfect spot. It's right where the opposing team enters the field. It's literally a perfect location for the students to annoy the opponents. I also think the entire storming the field vs opposing players thing is way overblown.

Story time - Okie state my Jr. year I got a late hit penalty on the opening kickoff, nothing malicious just finishing my block and didn't hear the whistle, the student section was right behind our bench and they let me hear about it the entire game. This is what the student section is for, to annoy the opposing team.

Didn't see the footage of the kid 'confronting' the OSU player. Was it a 150lb kicker or a 300lb tackle who was 'confronted'? What did the 'confronter' actually do?

Maybe the 'confronter' was actually trying to 'confront' the infamous Randy Smith.

If you put the students in the SE corner, they are next to the visitor's section. IMO not the best scenario. Why not move them to the other side of the stadium? Then they are the ones the players will hear when they enter the stadium. It would basically put them in the same position near the team - like it was before the team switched to the west side.

We recorded the game and watched it Sunday. At the end of the game, my husband pointed out CMC was with one of the OSU players and walking with him (CMC's security around both). We assume he was helping the OSU player safely move through the crowd.

Agree, Campbell and their quarterback, Spencer Sanders, were walking out with their arms around each other. Campbell was kind of leading the way. Security was around both of them.

I agree with you that the student section being in a place where they can impact the other team's sideline is a great plan in the overall scheme of things. I said it is in a horrible spot for field storms, which I think is 100% true. While 99.9% of fans (and players) act in an appropriate way during field storms, it is an emotional time and some people can lose their cool or do things that they shouldn't do. Having the opposing team cross paths with the student section during a field storm isn't a great set-up and IMO increases the odds of a negative incident, which could lead to a strict policy of no field storms, which would be a shame because I love them and think they are fun.

Ever tried to reason with a drunk person let alone a drunk 18-22 year old?
Yes. I have. And as odd as it sounds, you ask them questions about themselves quicker than they can answer. It has suppressed very intense situations on more occasions than I care to remember. But it does work.

Also, as I stated earlier, work to make it a tradition. And the very first part of it permit the student section to form a human chain allowing safe passage for opposing players immediately after the game. That'd make national news in a positive way.

Honestly I am not concerned about 1 person out of thousands. If that 1 person acts dumb then they get what is coming to them. Imo 1 person out of thousands is immaterial and not worth the effort to change things.

Field storms are going to happen regardless of a policy in place. The only way to stop it would be 1) put a fence up so people can't get out of the stands or 2) have the Army stationed around the field.

No matter where you put the students (and it's not always the students being dumb) if they wanted to get to an opposing player during a field storm they will.

That's true, but you can take steps to mitigate the risk of it occuring. Moving the student section to the opposite corner of the stadium, for example, would put the fans most likely to rush the field in the farthest possible position from where the opposing players would be leaving the field. Would it absolutely prevent all incidents from ever occuring? Of course not, but it might reduce the opportunities for incidents.

And that's really all we can do. Good faith efforts.

I think there would have to be some real-time decision to just direct OSU to their locker room and no hand shakes between anyone. Need some brute force in front of the student stands to allow them time to leave. Then when they are all out let the students (and that section/area) loose.

They could also communicate this over the loud speaker to inform them of the instructions.

Storming the field has become more of a trend and it isn't going away. We can say don't storm the field losers but they are just enjoying the moment. It won't go away.

Alternative solution is to make a narrow path that is gated or human wall to make the students and anyone in that area go all the way around the team. Like south and behind the opposing team.

Seems to me a video of Campbell a couple times a game with a PSA stating the athletic department could be fined $100k for field storming and believes we have better ways to spend the money.
