This is interesting. I do question if this is correct though. The B1G is number 4 (or lower) in viewership numbers? They have some huge fan/alumni bases. I know their Fox Big Noon Kickoff usually gets pretty large numbers (3-4 million+). I suppose the other games and especially those on the Big Ten Network could bring their average down quite a bit I guess.

As you move down the card I'm sure the viewership changes dramatically.

Are the networks paying for the average or the marquee matchups?

They're absolutely paying for the marquee matchups and name brands. Inventory and average viewers fall way down the line after that.

The cynic in me looks at that chart and says 'Damn, Texas and Oklahoma are taking a ton of viewers with them.'

Guys, what the hell... Iowa wasn't playing. Watch the BIG numbers shoot to the moon this week.

The ABC slot is the valuable asset here. Not as much the schools.

Yormark needs to take this to the negotiating table. I suspected the Big 12 was not far off from the overrated B1G.

Somewhat skewed by bottom feeders. When you watch the weekly numbers, the top 4 SEC games can get 4mil+, the B1G, 3 mil+ and then the Big 12 usually tops at 2 mil unless in marquee time slot.

A lot of the bigger conferences suffer in numbers though with games like Northwestern, Indiana, Vandy, etc.

The question is do networks prefer big value games of 4mil or two games of 2mil?

I assume that is because most of the Big12 games are on some network such as FOX, ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, FS1, FS2, which allows more people/restaurants to just turn a TV on and let it go. The Big 10, due to their size, probably has more teams than can fill the current TV slots I previously mentioned, which delegates their remaining games to the Big10 network. Those games probably draws the average down quite a bit as it's not as most people are stuck in their ways and stick to the ones I mentioned at the beginning (Especially ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2.

I have to think there is some fuzzy math here. Are we talking about just network/Cable games? How are they calculating ACCN and ESPN+ games for the Big 12? I'd be curious if they just aren't including Tier 3 games.

The overall average does not lie. the B1G is loaded with doormats. They are a brand of boring unimaginative football.

Demographics people, people studying populations decades in advance are forecasting massive population increases for Texas and surrounding states in the coming years and projecting massive capital inflows into Texas and surrounding. Big 12 will be fine, will make less than the P2 but will still have big boy football and be able to send its top 1 to 2 teams to the playoff, and will likely do very well as a basketball conference.

Corner 4 to the Big12 confirmed then.

The B1G is merely a mirage or perception. The viewership numbers are what they are. The B1G is brilliant at negotiating big TV contracts for their inferior product. I will give OSU, Mich their props as they are legit.... the rest of the conference (especially the west) is very dull and unwatchable football. Good cure for insomnia though.
