Best vacuum? Dyson? Miele?

We have a Kirby. Heavy duty, has tons of suction and is terrific at vacuuming up everything. Through 4 kids, a rabbit, 4 cats, 2 German Shephards and now a Newfoundland, we'd tried other cheaper options including Dyson, Shark and Bissell but nothing cleans as well as the Kirby. It's heavy as hell though so dealing with stairs is a PITA. We did get the carpet shampooing attachment which is also really good. We have used their lifetime warranty once, and in addition to fixing what was wrong they refreshed the whole unit at no cost.
My mom has had a Kirby for like 25 years. She got a new one within the last year or so, but the rest of that time was with just the one vacuum. Those suckers are damn reliable and will last forever. I've got a Dyson stick vacuum that I bought refurbished a couple years ago. I've been really happy with it, but I would definitely needed a newer model with more battery life if I didn't live in a 800 sq/ft apartment.

Dredging this one up, Costco has a killer deal on the Tineco S11, $170. This is probably 50% off or better.

I stumbled upon this by chance as our old venerable Dyson V7 is on its last leg. Battery almost dead, and housing cracked (side note you can get Dewalt/Milwaukee/Ryobi/etc battery adapters which work well)

Quick review is the vac works really well, better than V7. Lots of pros in comparison to the V7 but one significant con:

Pros: Quiet, seems to pick up more dirt, lots of tools and features, no hair tangles on the brush roll, and the auto mode actually functions. Regarding the hair tangles, I have 3 long haired females in our household...

Cons: Although the dustbin has a quick & easy 'dump' feature, it doesn't work near as well as the V7. For the S11 if you have long hair in your house it wraps around the tube inside the dustbin, and you have to take it apart to get everything out, or at minimum grab the junk out and pull. The V7 would just drop all that stuff. I should note with the V7 though long hairs tend to wrap on the brush roll instead of getting to the dustbin.

For hard floors, I’ve found nothing better than the ryobi cordless. Had a Dyson and it wouldn’t pick up crumbs. Drop a Cheerio on the floor, it would just push it around. The front edge of the Ryobi sits higher off the ground so it picks up everything.

Also, since they use the tool batteries, never have to worry about battery life cause you just swap it out if you need to.

For carpets, give me the Dyson ball plug in. Never seems to get the power out of a battery operated one.

According Wirecutter SEBO is best.

I don't do the cleaning anymore but we have both a Dyson and a Miele.

I like the Miele because you can get HEPA filtering bags so it doesn't stir up dust and stuff that kill my allergies. It's awkward having that old style pull behind thing, but it allows you to get different types of "rollers" or whatever you want to call the part around where the suction starts. Example - we use a head that really beats at the carpet and sucks up the most. I've used it after the Dyson and it's amazing how much more it picks up.

The Dyson is great because it's strong and all in one so easier to maneuver. Miele has upright models as well, and Dyson has or at least had a wide range of uprights with different capabilities. They work well but they just don't filter the exhaust air quite as well.

Now, the Dyson hand held ones that kinda look like a weed eater are really handy if you have the extra powerful head. But, it's not going to do as great for an overall clean.

When we got both of ours, of course I over analyzed the different models of each and found that there is a lot of difference between say the low, mid, and high tier for both brand.

The key with the Dyson is to get one of the soft roller heads. We bought the V12 last black Friday to replace our V8 and the soft roller is a game changer on hardwood.

OK. We just had the standard rollers since it was advertised for use on hard floors. I think it was one of the early battery models, maybe a V7 or so? But now that we have the Ryobi, I’m not sure we’d try anything else.

Speaking of Dyson, I did this little mod the other day. It now lasts 30+ minutes on max mode.

I did that with mine too. Was just gonna live with it until I noticed the case around the pistol grip was cracked. The only negative is if you use the dock, it won't fit in the dock anymore. Those two things led me to buy a new one (Tineco S11 Costco $170)

Now the V7 is demoted to car/garage duty.

If you own a Dyson and plan to get new carpet, check the carpet manufacturer's warranty. In 2018 we were told by a flooring salesman (and owner of the business) that some companies will actually void the warranty if the owners use a Dyson. It had something to do with the bristles and suction. He said it actually happened to a customer that installed high end carpet. I haven't personally researched this. We have a Shark and love it.

I'm going to do this as soon as my battery gets much weaker. I really like being able to hang/charge on the dock,
Be mindful not run the battery too low. I've read that Dysons will sometimes over-discharge batteries and essentially kill them.

My Dyson is on its third battery. Each time, I bought one off Ebay and swapped it out.

I've heard that on other things too. I think there are ways to fix that, but better to not get in that situation to begin with.

A few years ago, I was looking at some high end models. In the end, I decided to cheap out and get a Shark NV360. I noticed it's on sale right now for $100 on Amazon. It's been decent for us.
