Years ago, I went to the Comedy Store on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles ostensibly to see "Partying Marty Hardy," whose real name was Marty Cohen. He was kind of a big deal in those days as a host of Solid Gold. Well, he never showed up so we got some guy named Jimmy Brogan instead. If you look him up, he might look familiar to you. He's been on Carson, and also had a guest spot on Happy Days. When I think of the guest spot, I remember him in a devil's costume, and in the same episode where Robin Williams made a guest appearance as Mork, but I might be misremembering.

Anyway, Brogan never had an act. He didn't have prepared material or if he did, it was very minimal to fill gaps. His shtick was to engage members of the audience and make you laugh with the conversation he was having. He even made a joke about his lack of an act. He said when he auditioned for the Carson show it didn't go very well. He said he walked into the interview room with three executives and said, "So, where you from?" That's the first question he would usually ask an audience member.

If you got up from your table for any reason, you were a target of this guy. I got up to leave, not because I didn't like the show, but because I had been there a while and it was time to go, and he spotted me and asked me where I was going. I said "home." He asked me where I lived. I said Iowa. He said, "yeah, you probably should get started."

Since he's the only comedian I've seen live, I'd have to say he's the best by default. He was pretty funny though for not having an act.
