Best ISU Basketball Player Ever?

Jeff Hornacek:
The son-of-a-coach, slow white kid, who walked on to Iowa State, but yet managed to play 15 years in the NBA and score over 15,000 points.
Never a flashy player, but a very solid floor leader and all-around great guy. He was one of the best.

:biggrin9gp: If you have Horny off the list, then you never watched him play for 3 years. He was MONEY his entire career.

1)Fizer-unstoppable in the low post
2)Hornacek-made everyone around him a better player, made the big play
3)Tinsley-could take over the game at any time, sometimes too often
4)Grayer-living proof that heart and desire can overcome anything
5)The Mayor-had all the tools and a great knowledge of when to use them

Gary Thompson is #1 because besides being one of the best players of his time, he'd kept on giving to ISU after he graduated. Gosh the guy helped bring Tim Floyd and Larry Eustachy to ISU.

Jeff Horneceks #2 because he was a very solid leader and played extremely well in the NBA for a lot of years.

I'd lump Grayer, Hoiberg, Tinsley, and Fizer together. Great flash in the pan guys who really contributed when at ISU, but have had mixed success at the NBA.

Marcus Fizer! The guy was simply a stud. I have an autographed "Beat Iowa Again!" t-shirt from him and it's framed and on my wall. He will always be #1 in my book. Anybody know where he is at now?

Thompson, Stevens, Grayer, Hornacek, Hoiberg, Fizer, Tinsley you can't go wrong with any of them.
Best player I never saw play: Gary Thompson
Best player I ever saw play: Fizer
Best single game I ever saw: Rhodes vs Iowa

Three way tie between Grayer, Fizer, and Hoiberg. Tinsley, while great, loses this race because of Hampton. I still can't get over that! :angry6wn:

During their time at Iowa State, I'd have to say Marcus Fizer. After leaving Iowa State, the answer is easily Hornacek.

hoiberg because of the impact he left at isu. i wasn't even an isu fan yet while he was playing there and yet i know practically everything he did for the program. tinsley second.

kelvin was a shot blocker and probably one of the best but i would have to vote tinsley as the best.

hakeem adel kaleek... i dont know if i spelled that right...owell... ok so he wasnt the best but he was for sure the funniest!!!
my picks... from what ppl are sayin
grayer
tinsley
fizer
hoiberg
hornacek

and a add on.. stevie johnson!! got to love the guy

Tough question because we have SOOOOOO many from which to choose!! However, Jeff Hornacek is the best basketball player from ISU: Unselfish - could hit the big shot when needed; was calm under pressure; had an incredible basketball IQ - allowed him to be a COACH on the floor; and had a fiery personality that commanded respect & made him DESPISE losing!! (no way that J.H. misses that gimme layup in 2001 Boise disaster - Tinsley was awesome, but I sometimes felt he lacked that extra "fire".)

I look at a wasted piece of talent that was Elmer Robinson (whom J.O. said was the best "athlete" he'd ever coached) - yet, during his Frosh. season he was a difference maker (eg. scored the clinching basket against Mich in '86). Why did Elmer have a good rookie season -- Jeff Hornacek wouldn't let him be lazy on the floor. After Hornacek left, Elmer had no on-the-court leader to get his big & sorry behind in gear on a consistent basis.

Hornacek then spent a "lifetime" in the NBA. In the 1991-92 season he made the NBA all-star roster (scored 11-12 points in that game, I believe). He led Phoenix and Utah into the playoffs, Utah into the finals, and even had an NBA record of 8 straight 3-pointers in a row (has since been broken).

I love all my 'Clones (from The Roland Rocket to Marc Urquart to Ross Marsden), but J.H. was THE key on-the-court general who helped Cyclone Basketball and Hilton Magic become what it is today. That's why he is MY CHOICE!

I am going to mention Homan mainly because of the North Carolina game in the 2nd round of the tournament. He was banging against some NBA talent and he was pretty much alone in the lane. He isn't the best but I think he is worth mentioning.

1. Marcus Fizer
2. Fred Hoiberg
3. Jeff Grayer
4. Jeff Hornacek
5. Jamal Tinsley
Others: Loren Meyer, Dedric Willoughby, Homan, Gary Thompson, Stinson, Victor Alexander, Tyray Pearson, and of course Andrew Skoglund

I have to admit that this is a tough question.

But I would still go with Grayer. He did everything, plus he was on the all defensive team for 4 years.

His senior year's team would have been phenomonal had Thompkins not gotten sick.

But Fizer's final year was as dominant as any.

And Hornacek was a true leader, left with the big 8 record for assists (since broken).

Tinsley just made every play that it took to win,

The Mayor would be 5
