The Iowa State strength of schedule thing is not true. Iowa actually plays a harder schedule on average. I would like to refer you to the "clown strength of schedule myth" thread in the Hawkeyenation rivalry forum.

So what has happened here Deano? I know it has been a while since you were on this site but did they give you a lobotomy or something over at HN or is it just natural brain cell drain from hanging around fellow hoks?

Interesting article from CBS today highlighting that Johnson County School for the Unfortunate has THE easiest schedule of any P5 school this year, but I am guessing you don't want to hear about that?

First off calculating a strength of schedule preseason is pointless. No one knows how good each and every team on the schedule is going to be. That is why it is best to use historical averages as that post points out Iowa averages a harder schedule than ISU. The point I am making is that the Iowa program is much stronger, and it has been for a long time. Hayden Fry made sure of that. I see what ISU fans want to do though. They want to just use one game as the barometer of how good a program is. Okay this should be fun journey in time for you older fans. Let's go back to the Bob Commings era. Iowa beat ISU, Penn State, and UCLA in those years. Therefore the Iowa program was as strong if not stronger than all those programs in the 70s according to Cyclone fan logic.

It's best to use historical averages for SOS?

What about the Big 10 is the same as it was 10-15 years ago? The Big 12? Is ISU still in the Big 12 North? Is Iowa still playing OSU consistently?

The college football setup has changed so much that the you can only go back 2-4 years when looking at SOS

Strength of schedule in the preseason is a fair point. This logic also negates your original post in this thread that said "ISU just isn't very good this year."

Using "historical averages" is a very Hawkeye thing to do: they live in the past. I would suggest you'll get the most accurate predictions of the upcoming season by averaging the most recent 3-6 seasons.

Now, if you're writing a thesis about the long-term comparison of the two programs, by all means use history. But if you're merely trying to squeeze twisted logic out of your hawk butt to compensate for the testament to mediocrity your football team has become and still make it sound like you're headed to the CFP, well, you can't do that.

Until you plan to stop molesting the numbers in the back of your conversion van in a Wal Mart parking lot, the only point you've made is you have no grasp on reality.

Worst case: During the Iowa/Iowa State game an airplane crashes into the field killing nearly everyone in attendance but also blowing a hole into an underground cavern that the Crab People have been secretly digging. The Crab People come pouring out of their subterranean lair and enslave the Human Race.

What is the score when the plane crashes? What period is it in? What politician is on the plane at the time?

You.Are.Wrong on every count.

I will grant you that calculating SoS on a detailed basis is hard to do every year but we are talking a few degrees of separation. We are talking a massive gap. ISU has the 17th toughest schedule in country. Iowa the 100th.

Averaging the results of a team that does not have the players or coaching personnel from those years is pointless. IF you were going to do that you might go back 4-5 years but saying the results, culture or talent of the Hayden Fry years has a bearing on the games now is asinine. If that is the case, why aren't the hoks whooping up on the Cyclones by 30+ points?

And why are you such a coward that you revert to single instance such as the one time the hoks beat UCLA or a Penn State some 30 years ago.

Please explain how a team that has lost to another team 3 of the last 4 years can be considered any better than that team? That is the fact staring you right in the face that you won't address. How is that 1 game and not 4? What better measure is there of the relative strength of two teams as compared to each other. You yourself say that relative strength of opponents is hard to establish. Or may be it is the superior football wisdom Hok fans are born with that let you declare it so?

The only point your are making is that you are still in 1990's hokeye dreamland.

I must say though, good to have you back Dean, the lackies you have sent over in your absence are, well, lets say very much like current state of affairs in Hokeye football - very unentertaining and underperforming.

What you don't understand is that I am pointing out the absurdity of Cyclone fans by using their standard in talking about the 70s Iowa team. Since by cyclone standards one big win per year makes for a successful program. I do understand cyclone resistance to looking back at history since most isu football history is bad.

You are right, we don't understand.

We are looking back in history at the most recent 4 games against Hoks. ISU won 3 of them. But you won't address this, please tell me you brought more than the 1990's to this discussion.

Come on, give him a break, he only went back 34 years in his "up for big games post".:biglaugh:

For recent years. Iowa has a winning record in the past 7 years vs Iowa State. In those years Iowa has outscored ISU 178-109. Per game that averages out to 30-18.

You can't be real, if you are I do feel sorry. A successful Fry and Ferentz are years gone by.

Fun fact which team beat 2 bowl eligible teams last year?

Wow, can you make this any easier?

You just keep proving my point.

Used to be better, trend is to ISU. OVer the last 4 years it is ISU and the trendline for ISU v Iowa is up.

It is over buddy, glory days are gone, welcome to the cellar, probably climb out of it over the next 30 years.

ISU is not trending up. They have went from 6 wins, to 3 wins, to 2 wins. I expect that this trend will continue this year down to 1 or 0 wins with UNI being a toss up game.

We will get at least one win. Iowa is still on the schedule. ;)

Splitting hairs again.

Iowa is trending down faster than Iowa State then. That trend will continue. Iowa will lose to ISU 3 of the next 4 years, best case.

You really will feel better when you can admit it. Come on, it is not that bad, say it. "Iowa is no better than ISU in Football." First step to healing.

I didn't know it was this bad Deano. I really think counseling is in order.

Nobody is saying that just cause its easy to beat Iowa now we're a successful program. But, by all means, continue to live up to the stereotype of thinking you are our "superbowl."

What trend down in the past 4 years for Iowa? Iowa won as many games in 2013/14 as they did in 2010/2011. They are holding steady and are posed for an uptick. Even in supposed down years for Iowa they win as many games that Iowa state does in their better years.
