Bear in Iowa

There's a quasi-reproducing herd in Black River Falls, WI but that still requires a trek across the big river.

Maybe Missouri? There's a small population there.
Wisconsin elk population has grown to the point where they gave out a few tags last year. I kind of follow urban wildlife stories and surprisingly (or maybe not) bears and coyotes are very adaptable to urban environments.

There's a group that has been studying coyotes in the Chicago metro area for quite a while. https://urbancoyoteresearch.com/ IIRC they have identifies and followed dozens if not hundreds of different individuals.

Coyotes are an incredibly adaptable species. We tried to kill them out in the late 1800s and early 1900s, but populations exploded and moved east. Before 1900, I don't think there were any east of the Missouri River; now, they are in every US state, besides Hawaii, and all the way down to South America.

Used to work with some guys from the Marquette area who claimed to know the site of multiple bear dens up in the bluffs in far NE Iowa. They were convinced we have a small population in that area, people just don't run into them very often.

We have seen Coyotes several times in our Twin Cities suburb and seen sign of them more often.
