I grew up in Ames and went to Iowa State from 2006-2010. I started thinking about Battles bbq recently and wanted to buy a similar sauce or make my own, but I don't know what style their sauce was. I see a new company started up last year that sells the sauce, Sauce Slingers. I also read that Jimmy's bbq in Boone follows the Battles recipe.

Anyways I'm in Ohio now. Can anyone tell my what style of bbq sauce Battles used? Does anyone know a recipe, or something I can buy off the shelf? Or has anyone tried sauce Slingers?

Thanks!

This is 100% the old Battles BBQ sauce recipe. This can be found on shelves in Central Iowa Hyvees. Or looks like they will ship from their website. I've got a bottle of both the mild and spicy in my fridge and it takes me back to splurging on a smoked ham sandwich in my college days.

Thanks, I think I'll order a few. Do you know what "style" it is? There must be similar products. I've been buying stubbs lately, but it's not Battles.

I still remember my order:
Large beef
Ruffles
Texas toast
Lemonade

Dip beef sando, ruffles, and TT in sauce (reg and spicy mixed)

Exact same order I would get, and I followed the same process haha. On occasion, I would get the sandwich on Texas toast instead of a bun.

I would buy a couple of bottles of Jimmie’s and send it to you. Since Jim ran the Battles in Nevada, he made the sauce. I can’t find anything closer to the original Battles sauce than Jimmie’s. Besides having at least two bottles on hand at all times, I also have a bag of Ruffles on hand! ;)

God dammit I miss Battles. I worked at Kingland for 2 years after graduation and would walk up there at least once a week.

It was better when it was off Hayward but still pretty damn good right up until the end. Free refills on lemonade was the jam. Jimmys in Boone is still as close as you will get. Damn, now I’m hungry for Battles. RIP.

I wouldn’t say Battle’s sauce fits perfectly into any style. But if I was going to hunt around to find something similar I would probably start with Memphis style sauces There’s enough variety in Memphis style sauces that some might not taste anything like what you’re looking for and others are close.
