basketball states

Ohio is a football hot bed. Definitely more football than basketball.
For football:
1. Texas
2. Florida
3. California
4. Ohio

we've also had some pretty good ones for our size.

Just off the top of my head

Street
Hoiberg
Meyer
Lefrentz
Heinrich
Collison
Korver brothers
Paige
Haluska
Horner
Sears
Barnes
Jacobson
Farok Minesh (sp??)

plus all of the ones I can't think of right now.

% wise, metros like Chicago, LA, NYC and DC still produce the highest rate of NBA players, both in bulk numbers and per person. Specifically even smaller neighborhoods within those metros are putting out insane % of NBA players per person compared to the rest of the country.

But Iowa really holds its own and outclasses a majority of rural states when it comes to producing future NBA players.

Is basketball popular enough at the high school level in Iowa for us to really be a basketball state?

I think as a state we get a lot more excited for football playoffs than b ball. Hell we even get more hype for the wrestling tournament than basketball I think.

Honestly I think the state of Iowa would be better off putting more emphasis on basketball than football.

I know it's considered hokey by today's standards, but if you didn't live through it, you probably don't have the appreciation for how big of a deal it really was;

Don't forget the storied history of Iowa 6 on 6 girls HS Basketball back in the day before practically any other states had ANY girls basketball.

Yeah I've heard stories. It's too bad there's little to no coverage and interest in girls b-ball anymore.

Having lived in both Iowa and North Carolina, I can tell you that Iowa has a long way to go before becoming a "basketball state".

First, there are no NCAA basketball championship banners residing in the state of Iowa. That's kind of a big prerequisite.

In North Carolina, basketball was all people would talk about all of the time - even at football games. There are basketball camps every month of the year for kids. Just about every church either their own youth basketball team, or if they're big enough, their own youth basketball league! Nobody knows that college wrestling is even a thing except for the college wrestlers themselves (they're all from Pennsylvania and Jersey anyway). Basketball is a much part of the culture of North Carolina as football is in Alabama. Yes people in Iowa like basketball, but the state does not completely shut down if two of the four basketball teams in the state play each other. In NC, everything shuts down.

Is Iowa trending toward becoming a basketball state? also what are some other basketball states, the obvious ones being Kansas, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Washington. I'm defining basketball States as states with multiple programs with past or recent success.

I live in Washington state currently. If Washington state is what you meant... no not so much. College basketball is basically an afterthought on the local news. UW is good, and they can't even fill their arena - even with 40K students.

I assumed he meant Washington D.C. That is a freaking hotbed of basketball.

This!

How did you leave out Alabama from this list?
