Arizona Postgame Thread

I guess what I’m saying is that Sama has pretty similar build and speed to Breece. And neither are super elusive. Both have good contact balance. What Sama lacks is the vision, patience and decisiveness that Breece has. And those things are incredibly important for a RB. I will say that Breece is a much, much better receiver out of the backfield.

Breece Hall was incredibly elusive.

His movement was much more of a plant and go type vs. juking but he was super elusive and deceiving at that.

As always, the Bruns podcast was good today.

But I do have a point of discussion with a lot of the talk we hear from the CF and Iowa Everywhere guys---not Ben---but a lot of the podcast guys/facilitators. A topic of conversation always seems to be how Campbell seems to be slaying a lot of dragons the past couple of years. And I completely agree that we have been at a higher level the last two years. But it always seems like the insinuation is that we should be surprised at how good we are compared to the early Campbell years and that it is some huge shock that after 10 years we are good. And I contend things were pretty much elevated from the start. From the road wins to the winning conference records to our overall record, we have been in rarified air since 2017. I guess my point is that it is pretty damn cool that we are continuing to grow and get better. We didn't just peak in 2020 and then fall back into mediocrity. And that is pretty amazing. This ride has been incredibly fun from that win at Oklahoma to now.
Agree. We aren't a fluke or lucky or a bunch of Rudy types who just play hard for Campbell. This year's team and last year's both are/were really good teams, no matter what conference we're talking about. And now we finally have really good depth at positions as well. And that's really what separates the men from the boys in college football.

And we aren't some flash in the pan either. We've been consistently near the top of this conference for 9 years.

It's been fun seeing all of the Arizona media and/or fan tweets about how great the atmosphere is in Ames and how Iowa State is a really good football team. How many times has that happened? For some years we were a sure win for teams, for some years we were a team that could sneak up and beat teams, and now we are a team that no one pencils in as a win. Campbell is 65-51 at Iowa State. 14 games above .500???? That's hard to do anywhere.

Yep. It's never been better to be a fan of ISU. Remember 5, 10, 20 years ago about "taking the next step"? Well, I'd argue we have actually taken that next step already. Obviously we all want MORE. But the point stands. We are no longer that annoying underdog that occasionally bites the big dogs. We're now often favored (for a reason).

Was hoping to see Flora back at PR. Is he still not 100% or is he simply not #1 any longer.

And, who was the player that Heacock ran onto the field to absolutely rip. What was the situation?

I think it was Surges after the second AZ touchdown. Looked like he and Van Dinter had some miscommunication issue that led to the open receiver. I had assumed it was Van Dinter’s fault since he looked like a lost puppy every time he was out there but I don’t think it was based off that reaction from Heacock

He also got after Lovett and someone else when we gave up a decent sized chunk before the half

I think it was Lovett. Earlier in the game than I thought. Man, was Heacock irate.

Really hard to do at ISU. Earl Bruce is the only other coach to have a winning record in the past 100 years.

It really feels like there’s more communication problems on the backend of the D than I’ve noticed in past years. Yes they are green and will learn. Particularly James was cover the same zone as a LB multiple times and got ripped for it ones on the sideline I believe. I didn’t see it get explicitly exploited but it could have. If my dumb ass noticed it, other coaches will. Something is still goofy with all that that need to get ironed out obviously.

What I would call that is elite change of direction. Montgomery was super elusive plus powerful. Breece was more patient, better top end speed, really good change of direction when he got into the secondary. Actually, Troy Davis was really good at that too...while having Montgomery's contact balance. Honestly, neither Sama nor Hansen check many of the boxes that those three did. But those three were all-American type backs.

Completely agree, Arizona should have hit a long TD on a go route right down the middle of the field last night too. We got lucky it ended up being overthrown
