Arizona Postgame Thread

Sure this was discussed in game thread, but I was curious what TV said about what seemed like a viscous illegal hit by Arizona on that punt return at end of 1st.

I agree the flora push impacted and should be considered, but disagree that the flag should have been picked up. 43 for Arizona made no attempt to avoid contact and voluntarily accelerated into the hit.

Did 43’s actions fit neatly into a specific penalty… not really, he was slightly pushed and it wasn’t targeting (barely missed head / neck) but that seems like behavior we want to discourage.

Seemed like good refereeing in a gray area.

He got there slightly before the ball. That was catch interference. He didn’t call fair catch so he was fair game. Luckily the ball went out of bounds so even if they picked up the flag we weren’t losing the ball.

I mean 99% of the short yardage plays were sneaks or runs with hansen. The one play you pointed out was 2 plays to get a yard. I don't really get your gripe
My gripe is why are we messing around with a play that can get absolutely blown up for negative yardage and kill a drive. See Texas Tech game last year. Literally cost us a crucial game. JUST.QB.SNEAK IT. or power to Hansen. Please!

Xavier was probably lucky that the guy came in early. If that had been timed up properly, he likely doesn’t hang on to that punt. That should have been a fair catch or get away. Trying to field that was not wise.

Now address the push.

Thing I really like about Mouser is you can see him learning from mistakes. Fun to watch.
100% agree. He is so smart and he will learn from it. I understand at times on 3rd and short you want to roll the dice on a play that has a chance to be explosive. Our offensive line, Carson Hansen and that QB sneak with Rocco are humming right now though. Just go right at defenses and move the chains.

If him and Rocco can get half the chemistry Rocco had with Higgins…
It took both Higgins and Hutchinson awhile to get rolling as well.

First 6 games from Higgins for Iowa State. He really started rolling after game 6.

1 catch 15 yards
8 catches 85 yards
3 catches 31 yards
1 catch 12 yards
3 catches 91 yards
1 catch 22 yards

Isn’t that something they can’t review with replay? One of the refs would have had to notice the push and have a conference and decide to pick the flag up. The way the AZ player accelerated on his own meant that no ref noticed Flora’s push.

Anyone else feel the atmosphere was better than the Iowa game? JTS was on fire last night.
I think the Iowa game was great to start but everyone got nervous after the turnover on punt return. Combine that with the typical slog most Iowa games turn into and it really sucked the energy out of the building. Last night was just fun.

I’m convinced there is a direction from the producers for the announcers to spin controversy into every call that might be reviewed. I saw multiple loose balls yesterday in multiple games where the runner was clearly down, but the announcers kept questioning whether the ball was out before his arm hit the ground, etc. this call was no different. The defender had enough time to redirect his path back towards Townsend annd load up for the hit after the “block.” So it wasn’t much. Just like the Iowa game, where is the cutoff for “blocked into?”

If you rewatch it, you can see the defender had to change direction after the block to come back to Townsend, so, if anything, he was blocked away from the play, not into it. The right call was made, but as announcers seem to be doing more and more now, they kept spinning it and questioning the call, for what, I don’t know. These guys were exceptional idiots last night. “Rocco doesn’t get enough credit, now back to how ******* awesome Fifita is.” I love how we got two INT.s on a guy they kept bragging about not having any.

Anyways, as others have said, the only thing illegal about the hit was that he got there early. There was no fair catch signal, no helmet to helmet contact and other than being there early it was a great hit shoulder to chest. I am still peeved how much they went on about the shove though.
