Any Recruiting News?

Back in the day, I remember when most of our signees were at least two time state champs, sometimes three, and occasionally four time.

So, what happened that now we’re bragging about guys who simply made the finals, or were medalists? Does the multiple time state champs thing simply not happen any longer?

1. winning multiple state titles in places like Pennsylvania is really really hard to do. 2. these guys haven’t wrestled their senior years yet, and they’ll all be favored to win a title this year. 3. not all of these guys are getting scholarship money to wrestle. 4. the recruiting competition is much stiffer than it was “back in the day”.

Yonger Bastida- From Cuba and projected at 197/Hwt. Can wrestle this year. Below are some accolades:
2020 Cerro Pelado Silver Medalist – 97 kg (lost to J'den Cox in the finals)
2019 U23 World Bronze Medalist – 92kg
2019 Junior World Silver Medalist – 97 kg
2019 Pan American Junior Gold Medalist – 92 kg
2019 Cerro Pelado Silver Medalist – 97 kg

Is there any potential eligibility issues for him? He looks like a one strong SOB.

He is eligible to compete when the season starts and is enrolled at Iowa State for next semester.
Good lord. That is nuts. Great guy to have to push Gannon, it looks like. Is he more likely to go down to 97 though? Would that potentially to give our team a higher ceiling?

My guess is they use the season to ease him into Folkstyle and adjust to college life in America. Think it will be a perfect year for him to be a good workout partner for Marcus and Gannon, wrestle at 197 in open events, and then next year compete with Duggan for the Hwt spot. However, he could very well surprise me and be ready for folkstyle and challenge for a spot. Thing about the upper weights is they dont ride nearly as much as lower weights, so the mat wrestling isn't as hard to adjust to as a lower weight would be. Conditioning has been known to be an issue with Cuban's and freestylers, so that will be an adjustment as well

Looking at some results now, he beat Hayden Zillmer at the 2020 Cerro Pelado before losing to J'den Cox, and pinned Jake Woodley at the 2019 Pan American Junior Tournament.

At the 2019 Cerro Pelado tournament, he finished ahead of Kyven, who got 3rd, along with Timmy McCall and Blaize Cabell. Can't find specific results right now, don't know if he beat Kyven head-to-head.

Found it: Bastida beat Kyven in 2019.

Yep. If he can handle college life (I'm sure the coaches have a plan to help him adjust) and can adapt to folkstyle, this will be a big time signing.

Don’t we have that blue chipper hwt recruit coming in from Pennsylvania too?

Woah! Always a challenge to make the transition to folkstyle, but man those are some freestyle credentials right there. Looks like a physical specimen and if he's been wrestling U23 I'm guessing he's going to be significantly older than a lot of his peers on the college level if he's a 4-year guy. That's always going to be a benefit from a physical maturation standpoint. He's going to be a fun one to keep an eye on.

Looks like when Echemendia switched his commitment, Dresser decided to go get some other foreigners. Seems like a good idea to me. Excited to watch how this plays out.
