All "Gripes" with Greg McDermott

Re: McDermott's Magic Extension: Last Time, I Promise

someone just ask KG what all this means because he would probably know, but how i read there are so many loopholes that McDermott could kill us with they really did design that so GMac could kill us if we are/WILL part ways after next season, minus negotiations, which is another story, if and when we part ways how what is the minimum amount he will get?

re: All "Gripes" with Greg McDermott

Also, recall that GMAC was being seriously courted by K-State at the time. They were offering more money and didn't have any stigma lingering over their program (well-other than the fact they were K-State.) Some forget that it wasn't just Iowa State after GMAC.

And as for the stigma surrounding the program, much of of it was created by JP himself in order to publicly justify WM's canning. Of course, it came back to bite him

I think it depends on if GMac signed an actual extension in April 07, or if people just assume he's got one based on a misinterpretation of the contract. If he hasnt signed anything, i think you could interpret that contract to mean we'd only owe him 1.5 mil if we fired today, 1.0 mil next year.

Would need to get to the AD and find out what if any new contract was signed for an extension. Maybe Chris could look into this for us and if there is a new extension, get a copy posted on the site?

re: All "Gripes" with Greg McDermott

Great Contract..........for Mac. What you are essentially saying is that Mac got a contract that pays him tons and IF he has people leaving it doesn't hurt him.... just the fans? That is a hell of a deal. All the money and no real responsibility as with player defections we are rewarding Mac by protecting him........ . Then tell me, If it isn't Mac's fault then who's fault is it?

Perhaps the fans ought to put a rider in their season ticket comittment. Like IF anyone leaves early, we get refunds as after all, we are paying to SEE these guys, not watch them defect. IF 30% of them leave then all season ticket holders get a 30% refund! Sweet! IB

re: All "Gripes" with Greg McDermott

So, I'm going out on a limb here and guessing that you haven't even bothered to look at the contract that you are defending so adamantly?

I also fail to understand the need to start a new thread to tell people in the other thread about the same topic that you think they are wrong.

Third, ISU legal department has said nothing about this, there was no press release about this, there has only been 1 statement from an AAD to a guy that runs a message board site. It's not like lawyers poured over this and clarified this. The AAD doesn't have a degree in law.

Also, for you to say you've read too many legal contracts to believe you can interpret the most simple legal document you have done a whole lot of legal interpretation in your original post. None of the things you claim in your first post were stated by ISU's legal dept or even someone in the Athletics Department. You seem to have either interpreted the contract differently (which is fine, that's what everyone is debating), or you are restating what an internet message board poster has previously stated (which goes against pretty much everything you've said in this thread).
  • Read the contract
  • didn't see the other post...sorry
  • just guessing that legal advice was given as that is standard protocol in business.

Darn, we played our trump card and gave him a 9 year job secure contract. What were we thinking?

re: All "Gripes" with Greg McDermott

As an attorney (and as a lay person for that matter) it looks clear from the face of the document that GMac gets one year for each YEAR we are down a scholarship and not for each scholarship.

The 3 scholarship losses were all in Year 1, so he got a year for each scholarship rather than year where we had scholarship losses.

re: All "Gripes" with Greg McDermott

Is there a clause that takes away years if we lose scholarships because with all of the player defections it is bound to happen.

His point is that isn't what the contract says. The contract says he should have only received 1 additional year.

re: All "Gripes" with Greg McDermott

I appreciate your condescending tone and all, but it's not my job to understand the situation at the time, it's Pollard's and if he would have spent more than a hour digging into it I think he probably could have figured it out. It's not like the investigation drug on for years. He wanted Wayne gone and the D1 scheduling thing was his vehicle to accomplish that. Based on how he's handled McD, I think it's safe to assume that if the same thing happened to him, Pollard would be standing behing him in support waiting for the facts to sort themselves out.

If you are going to ridcule the contract then you do need to understand the situation because the state of the ISU MBB program at that time was very instrumental in the structure of the contract. You can't say it was a stupid contract without consider what was happening at the time. You can use hindsight all you want but Pollard had to go with what he knew at the time. Quite honestly, no one was ******** about the contract when it was signed...no one. People act like a 6 year contract was not the norm. Heck, Lick signed a 7 year $1.2 million contract and walked into a much, much better situation. fact is 5 years is pretty normal and six is not out of the norm.

Yeah, it seems alot of people have said that. Apparently though, he got 3 and that has been confirmed.

I am thinking Pollard must have given him the three because Gmac and staff chose to move all of the scholarship penalties to Year 1 (which was the smart move), I guess Pollard must have rewarded him because he could have spread them out which would have resulted in more extensions.

Still don't get why people think a 6 year initial contract isn't plenty sufficient in basketball (totally different than rebuilding in football). Its not like he couldnt be exended as needed, but it would be based on performance rather than what car Jiri drove before GM coached here.

This. This mythical three-year extension that everyone refers to and the actually language of the contract don't match up.

Pollard made the situation worse with the way he handled the firing of Morgan. Morgan told players to leave so it really was Pollard who screwed us there and then screwed us with GMac's contract. He created the bad situation.

The only way he for sure gets 3 is if he signed a new document. Otherwise, we'd have a good case for arguing that down to one if we wanted to fire him. If he signed a new document, i'd like to see that out there.

That's the way I see it. If GMac is fired next year the athletic department sure as heck better be arguing he only has two remaining years left per the terms of the contract during the buy-out negotiations.

re: All "Gripes" with Greg McDermott

And as for the stigma surrounding the program, much of of it was created by JP himself in order to publicly justify WM's canning. Of course, it came back to bite him

Yep, JP created LE, no facilities, and he wrote the D1 Scheduling article. And JP caused Wayne to lose the fan base/donors all in six months on the job.

Sorry but LE and D1 Scheduling (as BS as it was) created most of the stigma.

re: All "Gripes" with Greg McDermott

Also, apparently someone in the AD told Paul Clark yesterday that gmac was given an extension for 3 years in April 07, so it comes direct from the dept.

Is there a link for this?

Yes, it extends him three more additional years. We are stuck a third time. He will be our coach till you retire.

Are you sure they were all in year one? Did we have APR issues in year two as well?

Well then it goes back to whether or not Morgan should have been fired. I won't go there but if Morgan was fired a year later, it would have been the same.

Plus you need to look at the players that were leavign whether Wayne was fired or not. Carr, Stinson, Blaylock, etc were rumored to be leaving anyway.
