Alex Gordon remains a Royal

I think that's a really great deal for the Royals considering the numbers that were getting thrown around before. Although it will be a bit hard to judge until the other OFs get their deals.

If they can wait out the pitching market and sign a couple guys like Latos it will be a nice off season considering their budget constraints.

Do you think Latos or Fister is more likely to turn things around in 2016?

Big thing for Royals was not having to go five years.

One more decent starter and the squad is looking good for another run next year.

4 years is great. Even if his body starts to break down by the end of it, he can still DH or play 1B (I assume Hosmer is going to be gone after 2017) and give them some value.

Co-worker said he was in Scheels this past weekend and all of the other jerseys were at normal price, but the Gordon jerseys were marked down to $10. I'm betting someone was running out to that rack with a price gun when that news came out.

In before "baseball is stupid."

Im surprised there wasnt 2 years of trade protection. He doesnt get 5/10 until the end of 2017 season.

What was the point of not wanting to commit to a 5th year, but then deferring payments?

I heard most deals for him were in the $15-20 mil/year range, so this is right in the middle of that.

Royals lost a lot this offseason. This was definitely the man they needed to get considering their market. Not terribly expensive and still young at 31.

Haven't seen the specifics but in cases like Bobby Bonilla it was something like 20 million spread out over 20 years. If you can spread 18 million out over say an additional 5 years after the contract "expires" than it frees up payroll and not having to commit the full 18 million in year 5 AND have a 36 year old on your roster.

Plus I would assume there is some sort of interest rate factored in as well, which is why a player wouldn't mind signing that contract

Where are the contract details -- I haven't been able to find them?

Backloading or deferring payments makes a sense for the Royals because it allows them more flexibility in their 2016-2017 window. The Royals may very well tank in 2018 with a cheap payroll if their farm system doesn't produce a lot of talent in the next couple years.

4 years 72 million and..... a mutual option for the 5th year. Dayton just couldn't help himself.

$12M, $16M, $20M, $20M and the mutual option year would be $23M.

Good deal for the Royals. Extends the window of opportunity through 2017, when Hosmer is gone anyway. Royals may have to blow it up in 2018, but have two more years to make hay. And discounted front end leaves them comfortable to secure a #3 level starter.

Gordon had a soup and salad at Barley's Brewhouse in Shawnee for lunch after his deal was announced. I'm watching the World Series DVD right now since it was in the mail when I got home. Awesome.
