I love the huge advances in basketball metrics over the past few years. It has unlocked a great new conversation in the sports world; can we predict the outcome of sports? What I have seen is that we can understand the physical side of the game pretty damn well. What we can't yet understand is the effect of emotion and grit of a player, team, or coach in different situations. I personally don't believe that this will ever be accomplished with statistics, and it is one of the major strengths of this Cyclone team! You just can't measure guts, grit, and the willingness to bleed for your cause.
Advanced statistics are great, but they are just a piece of the whole puzzle. I'll forever be frustrated by the crowd that puts all their eggs in the Kenpom basket when making picks. I think the mystery and diversity of human emotions in competition is what's special about sport.
