8-11-08 Olympics Discussion Thread

I beleive that Marta is the head coach and Bella now runs USA Gymnastics. If Lyukin's score was 9.975 then Shawns should have definately been higher. Bella was astonished that two judges gave it an 8.8, called them outright cheaters.

There isn't any widespread scandal, if that's what you're looking for. In the qualification round, Shawn Johnson absolutely nailed her beam routine- not a single imperfection- but the judges gave her a comparatively poor score. Afterwards, Bella Corolli was pretty much beside himself in an interview, and came right out and accused some of the judges of having anti-US bias, and taking it out on Johnson's score. He was pretty unhappy about it, and from other posters, it sounds like he also knows what he's talking about.

I did too - I know nothing about balance beam routines but compared to the others, hers looked VERY difficult, and she nailed pretty much all of it. Fun to watch!

No. His wife is the current "head coach," and Shawn's coach is also one of the coaches. I'm sure Bela is still quite involved.

I'll just say I don't recall Shawn ever getting below 16.00 on her beam routines. Last night was the first time I remember. Same with Liukin.

Johnson competed in the American Cup on March 1, 2008 in Madison Square Garden. On vault, she fell on her Amanar vault and received a score of 15.175. She stated[citation needed] that her attempt to "stick" the vault caused her to stumble. She scored 15.625 on uneven bars, 16.325 on balance beam, and 15.975 on floor exercise. In the All-Around, Johnson ranked first on the vault, balance beam, and floor. Nastia Liukin[citation needed], won the All-Around title. Johnson won the silver medal.

One week later, Johnson competed in Jesolo, Italy against Italy, Spain, and Poland, with teammates Jana Bieger, Olivia Courtney, Chelsea Davis, Bridget Sloan, and Samantha Peszek. The U.S. won the junior and senior all-around team titles, and Johnson won the individual all-around title with a score 61.7 points. She also earned the highest scores on three of four events, on vault (15.2), beam (16.2), and floor (15.0.)

Now as of last nights qualifications.

Iowa's golden girl finished in first place overall with a score of 62.725. Johnson scored a 16.000 on the vault, 15.325 on the uneven bars, 15.975 on the balance beam and 15.425 on the floor exercise.

I will say, Marty on M&M touched on this a few weeks prior to the start of the games, and he was completely on target with this comment. To think for one sec that Shawn could come into the Olympics and run away with the Gold all around fair and square is by far reality. She will have to clearly impress the judges to get the scores that deserved otherwise she will get screwed as we've already seen.

It was a stellar routine - very odd score. Fortunately, it was just the qualifying round and the end result was she still qualified.

Rather subpar night for the girls last night though. Too many mistakes. Hopefully they just got 'em out of their system.

Simply put, both of them got royally screwed. Between crappy judges and the cheating Chinese, our gymnasts might be in trouble.
 
On women's volleyball, as Brazil is destroying Russia, the commentators had this exchange:

Guy A: "A big block from Brazil to continue their run against the Russian team."
Guy B: "Russia, an original favorite in this group, has really turned up to not be all that and a bag of chips."
Guy C: "I like Doritos."
Guys A and B: [utter silence]
Guy C: (after 3-4 seconds of dead air) "*ahem* So, uh, yeah. Um, Mari serving for Brazil..."

I think a new rule should be adopted to the "spelling police" - it should only be made a big deal if we're talking about actual English - in fact, I think you should be "sacked" for going "spelling police" on a name that comes from Romania :wink:
