3 Point Pod with Stanz and SC

Not a good comparison. Whenever you make it I feel obligated to point out the Paul R took over a 2-10 team and was fired at 3-9. Prohm inherited a pre season top ten squad and was fired at
2-22.

I should add…

2-22 gets trotted out like a trump card on here regularly but that team probably wins like 8-10 games in a regular, non-COVID year with a normal schedule featuring many more cupcakes than the one the last Prohm team had to play. Don’t get me wrong — that team would still have sucked and been an embarrassment, but you kind of fall into 8-10 wins as a P6 program.

The equivalent record of a football team to a basketball team that won, say, nine games is roughly going 2-10 or 3-9. Which were things Rhoads did, if I remember correctly. So the bad Rhoads and bad Prohm years ended up about the same place in their respective sports if you make a reasonable adjustment for the truncated schedule during the pandemic year.

The standards of Iowa State basketball and football are different and, as I said, Rhoads never had the expectations on him that Prohm did when he first came to Ames.

But Rhoads did have some talent when he arrived. Chizik was an ******* but brought in some dudes.

It’s difficult to get too worked up over Rhoads who took over a program is disarray and left behind a rebuild for the next guy. I just look at that hire in 2015 and saw the potential of that next coach to build on what Fred had done and keep us at an elite level long term. I don’t know how many chances Iowa State will have to build on that type of momentum. Steve accomplished a Sweet 16 and a Big 12 Tourney title but the way it cratered is such spectacular fashion sets it apart from other coaching failures.
The fact he was listening to Williams and Blum on a Monday morning isn’t that surprising. Hines indicated in an article a few years ago that him and Hobbs were watching film on IPFW and were had never seen an a few of their sets. When you are stealing from low level Summit League programs with an offense efficiency rate in the 300’s there are red flags.

2-22 is what is it. Maybe it would have been 7-24 in a normal season. But you can’t really shine up 0-18 especially when we had a winning in the Big 12 for 4 years prior to him taking over.

Many people on this board as well as Stanz and Scotty have been harping on the lazy passes leading to easy buckets for the other team. The only run out I remember is when Jaz ended up blocking TCU. That was the difference between the 2 games. If this team doesn't turn the ball over, especially lazy passes that lead to layups, they will be in the game.

There is no question it was time for Steve to go and recent record speaks for itself, but I don’t get why see why people would be so vindictive as to not wish him well with another coaching opportunity. Fred, on the other hand, I understand some of the animosity. Guy dropped us like a bad habit for an NBA job that - like most NBA jobs - was going to be over in a few short years. And completely gave up on recruiting which is why we had 1 top 100 recruit after the class with Matt Thomas and Monte.

Much worse. Ran over the Cyclone Basketball Program and screwed Iowa State for millions to get rid of his incompetence.

Look, he sucked but I wouldn't say he screwed Iowa state over. I have zero doubt he was giving every effort to make this program better. He just wasn't good enough at it.

Iowa State screwed themselves I guess. Prohm obviously isn‘t good at coaching. But has been every lucky in inheriting loaded teams and programs when hired at the 2 Head Coaching jobs he has had.
