MLB: ***2026 MLB Season Thread***

I have no problem with DH and interleague play.

But not a fan of the current extra inning rule. Too easy to score without a hit (e.g. ground-out to first and a sac-fly). I would start the ghost runner on 1st base instead of 2nd. Increasing the need to have a base hit to score a runner.…..
Agree.
It would be interesting to see an analysis on how different clubs strategize the bottom of the 10th inning In a tie game. Always thought they should walk the first player to set up the force (unless it‘s an unusually weak SO prone .150 hitter.)

Major League Baseball and ESPN have a framework agreement that would give the network the exclusive rights to sell all out-of-market regular-season games digitally and in-market games for five clubs over the next three years, sources briefed on the discussions told The Athletic.

ESPN would continue to broadcast around 30 regular-season games, but “Sunday Night Baseball” would move to a different night during the week. The games on the network would remain exclusive, meaning viewers would only be able to watch these matchups through ESPN. The agreement would begin next season.

The deal is not yet signed, and its full completion is not expected until September. The exact amount that ESPN will pay is not known, but it is substantial.

MLB and ESPN declined to comment.

The expected agreement arrives after ESPN opted out of the final three seasons of its deal with MLB, in which the network paid an average of $550 million per year for “Sunday Night Baseball,” eight-to-12 first-round playoff games and the Home Run Derby.

With cable diminishing, ESPN debuted its direct-to-consumer product Thursday that costs $29.99 per month and does not require a cable, satellite or YouTube TV-type subscription. The added features of its new app are available to most, but not all, customers who subscribe traditionally.

Netflix remains the heavy favorite to pick up the Home Run Derby for the next three years, while NBC and Apple are considered the top landing spots for “Sunday Night Baseball” and the first round playoff games.

Under the framework of an agreement between MLB and ESPN, ESPN would have MLB.TV as part of its direct-to-consumer offering. It is not fully clear yet if out-of-market subscribers who pay for the package through cable or other linear subscription would still be able to receive MLB.TV that way.

For digital consumers, fans are likely to need an ESPN direct-to-consumer subscription to go along with MLB.TV. The overall new pricing for MLB.TV is not yet decided, but is expected to be similar or slightly cheaper than the current $29.99 per month rate.

If the deal is signed, ESPN will have the full rights to in- and out-of-market games for five teams. The Cleveland Guardians, San Diego Padres, Minnesota Twins, Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies are the clubs under MLB control. Fans would likely need to subscribe to ESPN either directly or through an operator, and then, for an added price, they would be able to receive their local teams’ games.

The ESPN-MLB deal could eventually include MLB Network, but that is not set yet. MLB Network may be part of an add-on combo offering where it could be included in an ESPN bundle.

I'm in favor of at least one of the realignment versions I've seen. Let someone else deal with Boston and NY for a while!

Yankees should get a clown car bullpen cart.

Need a different manager and pitching coach first.

Latest infamous fan. Phillies made it right though. Kid got an autographed bat from Bader after the game so kudos to the Phillies.

The Marlins gave the kid some merch, too, good for them. I’ve also heard the woman may have lost her job as a school administrator after this made her internet-notorious (which, if she worked in a school, makes her treating a kid this way really bad).

Although I saw some folks online saying, “Hasn’t that kid already gone through enough to have to also suffer from Marlins gear?” :)

Perfect storm for the interweb, being the kid's birthday and everything. The ball grab reminded me a little of a game long long time ago. Yanks at Twins and Reggie Jackson hit a foul ball into the third base box seats where we we sitting. There was big scrum for the ball and my girlfriend ran over, reached in and grabbed it off the aisle. Sort of like the dad did. The guys were bummed but none gave her or us any crap demanding the ball.

The O's beating Dodgers after being no-hit for 8.2 inning is crazy. Coming back from down 3-0. I'd forgotten the O's were celebrating Ripkens 2131 streak yesterday.

Watched a bit of the Dodgers/O's before Cubs game. Fun to watch Kershaw pitch. In the velocity era, he doesn't throw a pitch over 90mph. He got a hitter to groundout on a 59 mph pitch.

Another crazy thing, Kershaw has over 450 career starts. Today's start was his first ever against Baltimore, the last team he hadn't pitched against.

Funny story kind of related to Gilbert’s insanity here. I saw the Syracuse Mets play the I-Cubs early on this year and Gilbert was really struggling hitting the ball this game. The guy was just walking back to the dugout cussing his brains out and about 15 seconds later you could just hear him absolutely going insane hitting his bat against God who knows what in the dugout LOL.

Well, this REALLY sucks for the Tigers and for MLB in general if he is injured. Tigers were even trying to protect him some. They went with a bullpen day vs Yanks to give him an extra day of rest (or at least that was the take in the booth when I watch that game). With their big lead, and having crushed the Yanks the 1st two games, they didn't need that win.
