If the Tigers aren't going to sign Skubal...as painful as it would be...don't they have to trade him? Look at the Angels and Shohei...sure they got one more season of watching him in an Angels uniform but in the end have nothing to show for it!
I would imagine they'd have to trade him before the deadline, yeah. It sure doesn't seem like they have any interest in signing him, really banking on nothing happening to him in the start of the season though. I guess he's already had his tommy john surgery.
The concern about dealing him at the deadline (other than potential injuries) is what if the Tigers are leading their division (certainly could be) and have one of the best records in the AL!?! How do you trade your ace away on your way to winning the division? The fans will go crazy!
I think they should probably trade him right now...get the best deal they can get for the long term. I would be shocked if the Tigers offered him a real number that would keep him in Detroit past this season so they need to do what the Angels didn't do with Shohei. It would be interesting to know what the Angels could have snagged if they dealt Shohei away prior to his last season in Anaheim.

I mean it's cheap, but if the decline continues he could be bad, probably worth $11 million though.
