***2026 Minnesota Vikings***

About as good as the rest of the defense.

Frankly, there was only one guy I was impressed with on defense the last few games: Duke Shelley.
Evans was good before going out. He and Shelley were pleasant surprises. It wasn’t like their veteran stars were flops, it’s just that none of them really played great, and the defense didn’t have anyone come out of nowhere to play great. It was like everyone played a notch below their contract. Hopefully that’s mostly coaching and can be addressed.

Evans and Shelley were surprisingly serviceable.

Starting at the 1:00 mark:

”There are certain moments that end a guys tenure with a team”
“It’s over for Kirk in Minnesota”

It's over because he played well but had one poor decision on a 4th and 8? You literally just posted in the Purdy thread that he had the 3rd highest QB rating this weekend

Cousins is always going to put up stats and continue to fail when it matters. He’s going to keep fleecing nfl teams for millions of dollars as he continues to fail in the big games and continues racking up playoff losses.

when is the last time any one of us made the kind of money that a "team friendly" deal would offer him. Guy would still make like 24 mil a year on a team friendly deal.
So to be clear you would do a job for significantly less than the market says you could do it for? He's not supposed to maximize his earnings while he's capable of doing so?

His employer is the Minnesota Vikings. They pay guys a ton of money to build a roster around every contract they sign that can compete. Kirk has no reason to be altruistic.

It’s not cousins fault it’s the Vikings fault, they massively overpaid. I still don’t understand what they were thinking paying him that much.

Plenty of NFL players have taken contracts for less than they’re worth in order to win a ring.

It’s not being altruistic, it’s about looking around and saying “I’ve already got generational wealth, and I would really enjoy winning a ring”.

I don’t expect anyone to do that, but guys who place winning at the top have done this on many occasions in many industries. There are tons of people that don’t chase the last cent in life when they have enough money and enjoy what they do or where they work.

What they were thinking was they could pay a lot to keep Case Keenan or roll with Teddy, if he ever returned. Keenan had a fluke year but both are backups. It was not a good contract, but the alternative really is tanking. There are literally only these scenarios at QB to win:
-Draft a good QB and win while he’s on his rookie deal
-Have Tom Brady that will take under market for 20 years
-Get Stafford and work the cap mortgage years in the future for one big push
-Have Mahomes, who is just so good it doesn’t matter
-Jury is out on Allen, but he’s got something like a Stafford deal with an exploding cap number. Oh and by the way, he does some great things but he makes a ton of mistakes.

Again, there isn’t some supply of decent QBs that are easy on the cap. Jimmy G? You think he’s winning with a bottom 5 defense and mediocre at best OL? Winston?

Disagree. Cousins was not the problem. He was money in the 4th quarter this season.

The problem with the Vikings is that God awful defense. They couldn't stop a Tom Manning offense if they tried.

And what could the Vikings spend money on to improve if they didn’t have to pay such a massive contract to cousins?

It’s really not that massive in the grand scheme of QB contracts. Dalvin Cook has a much worse contract for the team than Kirk. Harrison Smith, Kendricks, Thielen, and other older players also have worse contracts than what Kirk has

After next year, you get rid of cousins. Then you find a quarterback that you like in the draft and do everything you can to move up and get him. then you have plenty of money to build that defense and o-line. And just hope they don’t pick another Christian ponder. Get a cheap vet to mentor/backup that qb.…

Is Cousins even in the top 5 QBs by yearly salary? With his salary as guaranteed as it is, you lose out hard by letting him go. It quite literally saves nothing.

If so, he won't be for long. Whole lotta rookie contracts coming up in the next year or two. If he's a top-10 salary putting up top-10 QB results, then he's worth exactly what they're getting from him.

I fail to understand how people actively deny that the leagues second worst rated defense across the board isn't the core problem here. And it isn't from just this season and payroll. It's a long series of years of poor drafting and retention for that unit, made even worse by a scheme they aren't equipped to run.

The "take a team friendly deal and get a supporting cast" people always crack me up. Virtually none of us would do that yet we expect others to do so?
I don't disagree with your point, but it's a large part of how the greatest QB of all time came to be the greatest QB of all time, so you'd think more QB's would maybe take a page from that playbook. Tom prioritized winning over money during the prime of his career and I'd say it worked out pretty well over him. To each his own though

Looking at that video that Warner break down it looks like a $hitty play call or at least one guy didn’t run a good route. Had that slot receiver flattened that route its an easy pitch and catch. Not sure this is 100% on Kirk.

Cousins contract is not terrible in the "overpaying QB era".... BUT the Vikings are gonna have to pay JJ this off season. There will be some cap casualties coming.

Nice pic of Bud and Carl. I still think they should bring in a couple 100 ton of
snow in the stadium for a game in December. Turn the heat off and open the doors to let some cool air in.
I like this idea, but on the other hand I went to a game at US Bank Stadium in December 2016 when it was -20 degrees with a wind chill of -45 at 9 am that day. it was brutal even riding the light rail to the stadium … it would not have been fun to be outdoors or to have the doors open that day.

On the other hand, I did get to see Adrian Peterson’s final carry as a Viking, whuch was a fumble, so I got that going for me, which is nice.
