2026 crop year

Started planting corn on the 21st and got two days in, it's been too wet. It's rained every week in April including last night. I delivered last year's corn on a basis contract which was rolled yesterday for 2 cents, priced by the end of June. The contract holder stated that he expected the market to react to wet conditions delaying planting and from what I read on here, it is impacting conditions statewide.
Total amount is 7.35" in 8 events in each of the four weeks of April. With the cool nights forecast and a 95% chance on the 27th, additional field work in April is doubtful. Ever the optimistic cattle feeder, I filled a pen of 600 lb heifers at a custom lot this week. Freight went up to $5 per mile on the delivery which was awesome.

Another Amish report: I noticed an Amish man planted a cover crop with his oats last year. He just plowed it up. It probably happens a lot, but this is the first time for me seeing by my own eyes Amish using a cover crop.

What planter do you have? I had Ag Leader downforce issues a few years ago. A filter came apart in the downforce system sending pieces through the system. Plugged up a few sensors so it wouldn’t work on random rows. Had to flush it out. Was a pain and took some time. Didn’t put a filter back in it and has worked great ever since.
Kinze 4900- the Ag Leader has been a pain on it for 2 years now. In addition to the downforce issue, it flipped the tractor around so it thought the planter was like a combine head and on the front of the tractor rather then the back so it would plant. Had to shut it off and back up in a circle just to get it to realize the planter is behind the tractor.

I’m convinced the part of the FFA Creed that talks about the promise of better days through better ways, even as the things we now come to enjoy came to us from the struggles of former years was written about this planter specifically, and planting in general sometimes

In my area of SW IA, there's not a lot planted. We've had over 9 inches of rain this month. We got some cover crop sprayed this week and planted a few beans into average soil conditions before it rained again last night. Corn still in the shed.

8-14 day forecast from NWS takes rain out. Puts cool temps all the way to the gulf. Frost on the corn?

not a lot of heat coming SW-IA

I'm trying to get a better handle on some numbers and their exact GDUs for different physiological stages.

Here is a counter on a trial of 12 hybrids 107-115 RM...

Starter ferts 100% this year imo

Mine is also on a Kinze 4900. PM me if you want help. I’m decent with Ag Leader stuff but my dealer is really good.

Cover crops (specifically green manure) is older than people think. We're talking Roman Empire or earlier.

Like you said, they probably do cover crops a lot. Assuming they have grazing animals it should be much easier to justify.

It's Amish, closer look might be weeds.

Going to finish commercial corn today in Kossuth County. Most corn is in & big amount of beans also.

Lots planted beans last week before that cold snap. Those that didn’t plant beans worked a lot of bean stubble to be ready for corn planting

Working on logic issues on some values but generally the idea is here. I wonder how many of yall have started planting at 1 am because its fit finally?

As a former ag researcher spending many years in the field before trading in for a desk, I can say I don't miss fighting GPS/planting software going berserk. Especially in the middle of a pass down the field.

All to say I feel your backwards tractor pain.

Off subject a little but when I take my deer to the locker and donate it to the Iowa Hunger program, my thought is that those folks are getting a non-gmo, organic, fat free protein that is as close to ideal for those that are in to a healthy eating life style that is possible. Probably missing out on a revenue source at the Des Moines Farmer's Market for those type of folks.
