Nojus might be gone. As well as any other player on the roster. Just a fact in the immediate-eligible transfer and NIL era.

Basically, EVERY player is a free agent to seek more playing time, better perceived fit or bigger paycheck.

But, Kelderman getting minutes vs. Nojus isn't meaningful. One is a traditional PG (Kelderman) and the other off-guard/wing (Indrusaitis). 100% of Kelderman's minutes were to fill Lipsey's role on defense and to lesser degree run offense.

It does not mean Nojus is 100% gone, or that he can’t become a good Big 12 player.

But it’s also not meaningless how little time Nojus got when we’ve been missing players at the 2 and 3.

I’d like to think this staff would play/develop a freshman that is of Big 12 quality now, even if he’s not top-8 when we’re fully healthy…but maybe that’s not the case

The small ball lineup does wonders for our offense, but it absolutely cannot be a permanent solution if we're going to get dominated on the glass like we did against BYU. I hope a big is pursued. I'd prefer it be more in the Hason Ward mold than the Chat/Dishon mold.
Agree on the Hasan Ward type player. We need some high flyers who can alley oop

That’s not the point.

If you can’t understand that, you don’t understand defense or this program
I think Lipsey is

Yeah, Nojus isn't a PG. I hope he stays and gain some strength and confidence in the off season.

I disagree. Even if Kelderman is spelling Lipsey and is more of a true PG, he is an also a token walk on. When he was out there it was; don’t turn the ball over, get the ball out of your hands ASAP when you cross half court, and try to stay in front of your man on D

If Nojus was unable to replicate that with a higher ceiling, then I expect him to transfer during the offseason

It sucks if that's what happened. Nojus HS tape had me more excited than any TJ high school recruit so far.

On the other hand, that’s basically what we asked of Heise for awhile. It’s a valuable role.

Either he’s not ready for stepping into such a role when the team is without one, even two guys at his position, or he’s capable but just didn’t get minutes

Either way it’s a bearish indicator on whether he’s back imo

Much like Omaha last year. Nojus was getting beat or out of position on defense in the limited play he has had in the Big XII. That as much as playing behind great guards has limited his time on the court.

JT Rock, on the other hand, has shown improvement in getting to spots and being in better defensive position in a similar amount of playing time.

I'm sorry, I must have missed something. How much experience does Nojus have playing PG, in games or in practice? Having a higher ceiling as a shooting guard has nothing to do with why he didn't play PG. And, unless he or the staff says he's leaving, saying he's leaving is pure speculation .

Could Nojus transfer? Sure could. So could Tamin. So could anyone.

I just think it’s kind of crazy that everyone is dead set on freshman leaving after:

1. He’s stuck behind 3 guards that will have been all-conference at some point the last two years.
2. Didn’t come in to play a position he doesn’t/hasn’t played.

He very well could know that PT is on its way next year.

Way up there
Bringing in a guard might be tricky. I think we saw next year's starting lineup or at least the top 5/6 yesterday. TJ obviously really likes Heise, in a similar way to Gabe and Big Rob. They were guys everyone thought would get recruited over but who saw their minutes increase every year. Wouldn't shock me if he started next year and we target a combo guard who can play backup PG and take the CJ role in the portal, hopefully a two year guy. Then the young guys duke it out for the rest of the minutes off the bench at guard/wing. That would be a perfect scenario but it may be tougher than it seems. I don't think there really are a ton of minutes to give out when you factor in the increase Heise and probably Milan will get.

While Kelderman is a walk-on, it's easier for a walk-on guard to not be a liability on the court vs. a taller player. Nothing wrong with TJ just asking Kade to dribble, pass and defend- it's a role we saw PG's play 30 years ago. Seem to recall Jacy Holloway was pretty effective in that role.

So in practice, how much do you think Nojus runs the offense? The answer is probably 0% of the time. In practice, how much of the time do you think Kelderman matches up against Lipsey?

If Nojus was going to get minutes yesterday it would have been spelling Heise & Momcilovic. Obviously TJ preferred to give those minutes to Curtis Jones. Also not like Kade played 10-20 minutes. He played 4 minutes and filled a very specific role and allowed Tamin a couple breathers.

I wouldn't be surprised in Nojus transfers based on his lack of PT. But in today's college game, I'm not surprised when starters transfer- every player is a free-agent.

Or really any player

I agree with your first, second, and fourth paragraphs. And Kelderman was fine against KSU. Did what he was supposed to do. He was a liability against Houston, but Nojus didn’t do much better in his minutes.

My point is if Nojus isn’t getting playing time because he can’t do what Kelderman did OR spell Heise/Momcilovic rather than stretching CuJo, then I perceive him to be pretty far behind and a likely transfer (obviously speculating, no inside info).

A highly-recruited 4 star should, at a minimum, be able to come into a game for 5 minutes in emergency situations due to injury. To be honest, I actually expect most of our high school recruits to transfer moving forward. Ideally we get at least 2 good years from them before they do, and we put extra effort in to retain the special ones.

Agree that Nojus' lack of minutes could speak volumes. But TJ has been pretty consistent he isn't a coach that is going to play 9 or 10 guys, just to give a player developmental minutes. His preference is to play 8 guys in competive minutes based on pecking order and position. We've seen that with Watson the last couple years. His only minutes basically come if there is an injury.

I would disagree that playing all 3 at the same time or even 2 of Jones, Heise, Indrusaitis on the perimeter was a lineup option in TJ's mind. And TJ doesn't feel Indrusaitis is on the same level as Jones, Momcilovic or Heise at this point to get their minutes.

I am not saying at all that I hope Nojus leaves it’s just telling that he played 30 minutes across 3 games in Maui and has played a total of 23 minutes since.

That’s not what you want to see unless he’s got an underlying injury that hasn’t been disclosed.

I bet him and Watson both play on Wednesday.
