It will be even better when there are multiple year contracts and trades (with players having no-trade clause)
Unless collegiate sports split away from the NCAA I don't see a world where trades would be possible. These kids still have to be enrolled at a University and it's not like they can just pack up and head across the country in the middle of a season without completely messing up their schoolwork let alone the complications with moving their life off the court/field abruptly too. I just don't see trades of collegiate athletes something that makes a lot of sense right now. You think it's already complicated with NIL, imagine asking a kid to pack up and grab the next flight to a school they had never visited before and start over. Most of them enter the portal early enough where they can finish their current semester and be able to enroll at another university the following semester which is why the FB portal opens when it does so those guys have enough time to enroll for the spring semester. The academic piece is something that probably can't be worked around if you think in-season trades would be possible.
I do think making NIL deals multiple years contracts makes a lot of sense and would cut down on some of the portal chaos. College athletics is essentially turning into semi-pro sports now so just like coaches that can leave many of them have buyout terms on their contracts so can see where if a school wanted to try and poach someone away that has a 2 year deal they would owe that school or NIL collective whatever amount is in the contract or if a kid wanted to terminated his deal he would have some kind of buyout or forfeit some of the compensation he agreed to.
Makes my head hurt just thinking how much more complicated the portal and NIL world could potentially become.
