I think 3rd reason, fans were angry they paid all that money and it was over so quickly. Crowd actually seemed to be favoring djokovic prior to that which is somewhat rare
Ok fair enough, I get being disappointed, I would be too, but why boo the player? What control does he have over the injury? It’s like Novak purposely injured himself to spite the fans. It’s unfortunate but it’s nobody’s fault.

As a fan, you gotta know that there is always a chance a player can get injured and there are no subs to come in and replace him. That’s the risk you take when you buy a ticket. There are no guarantees you will get an epic 5 setter just because you paid 100s of $. Only expectation should be that the players give it their best effort.

Even if that article is correct in their accusations, that doesn’t explain why would he fake an injury now and retire from a semis match.

You could say he faked his Covid test for the ultimate goal of being able to compete in AO so there is a motive, but what motive would he have to fake injury in the semis and then retire. It’s illogical, and anyone connecting this article to justify doubting his injury (like you are doing) or booing him, is simply either stupid or just a Novak hater. I think you are both.
Yeah OK you worship Novak - fine. But everyone from McEnroe to Zverev were shocked to see him quit playing, all said he was moving very well. Would he have retired if he had won the tiebreak? Hmmm…
Plus if he was in such pain why would he care about the crowd and stop and do his gestures to them? I’d think he’d just hustle off and get treatment ASAP?

Yeah I never thought she would win one at this point. In her post match presser she said she has recently told herself F it just go out and play and not to put so much pressure on yourself about expectations.

it's kind of incredible how often it is when an athlete takes this mentality, things just click for them.

Worship? I don’t worship anyone. I am not in a cult. But Novak is my favorite tennis player. Simple as that.

So what if everyone was shocked he retired? That justifies booing? Did you hear Zverev’s words to booing fans during his on court interview with Courier? He put it perfectly.

You say would he have retired if he had won the 1st set. What are you implying? That he quit the match because he lost the 1st set? That just makes no sense. Better get that aluminum hat to go with your fake ass conspiracy theories.

He stopped and sarcastically gave thumbs up to the booing crowd only after they started booing. Before that he was walking off the court in a normal manner.

Hustle off and get treatment ASAP? He wasn’t dying. Wtf are you talking about?

I’ve had disagreements with other regular posters in this thread and even if we don’t agree on things, I feel it was always respectful and thoughtful. You, on the other hand, come off as a complete *******.

Plus McEnroe, one could tell, wanted to say more; he just kept repeating how “surprised” he was…

I'd guess Djokovic now regrets finishing the Alcaraz match. He probably had a small tear, then took pain meds. Once the meds kicked in, he looked to be moving pretty much normally and probably make the tear a lot worse. Whether that increases recovery time, I don't know for sure, but I'd guess it doesn't help.

Something to keep in mind when players tweak something and decide to retire rather than finish a match, even when they could probably could play it out. The season is just starting, you don't want to make a small injury into something that takes half the year or more to recover from. Tennis does not allow you to miss time easily. Rankings are on a year-to-year basis so they plummet quickly just from missing a few tournaments. It is an unforgiving sport.

Ya it's not right but that's what I think it was. The slam Semis and finals demand and prices are quite high. In tennis you don't know what you're getting. Could get a 5 set epic or what happened. At least in boxing which is only real comparable I can think of for tickets to these things if it's over quick that usually means someone got knocked out. Australian splits up the semi sessions too so the fans felt shorted had they had another singles match sinner/shelton that might be enough to stop some of the people from lashing out. It was obvious the way novak was playing he wasn't healthy. Never seen him serve and volley so frequently. It's not something he's really great at either.

I lay 95% of blame on crowd. Djokovic gets 5% of blame because he used to retire quite often and I'm not sure it was always injury related but that's been a long time ago. Today it's almost always genuine.

Just wanted to add another comment. Big names in tennis should speak up more about this. Make their opinions public so there is more pressure on BS decisions like this.

PTPA (which is basically Novak) has come out with a strong statement.

Alcaraz has come out with some politician like non-comment. I haven’t seen anything from Nadal and Federer.

It’s like everyone is playing this scared game of we don’t want to say anything because we like our squeaky clean image and don’t want to make strong statements on anything so the sponsors and fans don’t get mad at us.

Pretty gutless.

Nick Kyrgios came out with a strong statement...but most will discount that because he isn't afraid to say something controversial. Too bad...because in this case he is dead on!

Yeah he did. Medvedev made some strong comments too as well as Wavrinka. That’s what I’ve seen so far. Respect for them.

But the GOATs of tennis need to speak up. Present and past GOATs.

Positive for Clostebol? Reminds me of when Complete Nutritions were loading up high school football players with Halodrol in the late 2000's, similar compound.
