I cannot understand my farming family member sometimes. It was like pulling teeth to convince him to plant soybeans Thursday with good soil conditions and temperature. Yet today with slightly tacky soil, cool air and soil temperatures into a cold rain tomorrow he's antsy to plant more.
I’ve had customers wait all week when soil conditions are good and dry and then get all nervous when rain is coming and decide to plant right before a cold rain. I tell them that they did exactly the opposite of what should have happened.

I think it was herd mentality here. When I had us planting on Thursday we were among the only ones doing beans. By Saturday quite a few had switched and I think that made him antsy.

Have had close to 2" of rain since Friday. We haven't turned a wheel with the planter yet and have only worked about 160 acres. Not in a big hurry as of yet because it's not like things are behind. Looks to be a wet week though so it could turn into a thing of when things dry out, trying to slam it all in, in a short time period. I would say 15%-20% done overall in the area.

By the time we dry out from this week we won't be "early" in the planting season any more. Once again, the biggest window for "ideal" conditions may have been the earliest one.

Historically our best corn yields (according to Pioneer) are after April 20th, and early planted corn has resulted in poorer crop stands, vigor and yield potential. But will that be the case in 2025?

Uhgg!

Agreed, but corn laying in the ground for 15 days doing nothing isn't really an advantage either.
This argument is irrelevant unless you base it on where your area is. Based on the current 10 day forecast in Central Iowa, all corn in the ground is going to be absolutely like a pig in ****. I don't have a clue about anywhere else and maybe your point stands somewhere else.

Side note, it's also funny how the guys that plant last love to die on that hill, never fails every single year. It's always the same story, "just wait they will find out what happens when you plant that early" as they sit on their ass at the coffee shop. And yet year after year, near 0% gets replanted from the "not ideal" conditions. GDU's matter, old school thinking doesn't.

Nowhere and Everywhere
As of the rain Sunday morning we have 350 acres of corn and 150 acres of beans in. Earliest start we’ve ever had. Need 4-5 days to finish if both planters can keep rolling.

Have two friends done planting and a few others waiting until the 25th to start.

All my beans are planted. 0 corn. Not worried about it yet. My best corn was planted on May 14th last year. I know every year is different and would like to get some corn in the ground.

I was talking North East Central IA, North of HWY 20 East of I35. Conditions were good but soil temps being in the 40's and air temps at night getting into the upper 20's - low 30's didn't seem like much of an advantage. I think it also depends on how much a person farms. Bigger guys I understand yes better go, but less than 1500 acres it doesn't take long to get things done.

We missed out a bit to the north, only .1 in the gauge. With some sun hopefully can get some spraying done later today.

SW Iowa
My area in SW IA has snuck between rains and a lot of crop has gone in the ground in past 36 hrs. I know a couple people 100% done. We are done with beans and just over half done with corn
