NBA: *** 2024 NBA thread ***

i *think* i like jj redick but still dont like the lakers
I started listening to his podcast a couple years ago and I came to the same difficult realization as you.

As for the lakers, they are super tough when they(AD) are healthy. No way they make it to the playoffs healthy though. Their stars are going to have to play too much during the regular season for their age to be healthy at that time. I have no idea why someone would take their first head coaching job for that franchise. Or the Knicks. Seems like even if you win those two places, you aren't going to be there in the long run.

JJ actually seems to really know x's and o's of basketball.

That could turn out to be wrong, who knows. But the Lakers are an old team and I'd put them as a fringe playoff team. Probably a play-in team.

Old Man and the Three podcast was good. He turned into a pretty good interviewer after awhile. Way better than the hot take garbage.

I'd agree with that on the LA. If healthy they can pry beat a lot of teams in the playoffs. Would be surprised to see it happen though and not over multiple rounds.

I think this is the year it sets in that the next generation of stars is here and the old generation (KD/Lebron/Harden) is going to start breaking down. I'm sure we still see flashes but I can't imagine they are going to be durable enough to be difference makers the entire season.

AD and Lebron were great in the Olympics.
It'll be interesting to see if that has an effect.

Lebron was on a mission. I'm assuming he viewed it as a chance to separate himself from Jordan. Don't know if it worked or not, but sure seemed like he wasn't going to defer anything this summer.

I’m really digging the mind the game pod(YouTube) videos that JJ and LeBron did. Wish there was more of that out there.

I am going to guess Lebron is more of a 50-60 game guy this year because of all the work in the Summer instead of the 71 games he played last year.

West is going to be fun. I want to see Luka just take over this year and dominate.
East I think the Celtics will dominate. Only challenge I see is if the Bucks get to the playoffs actually completely healthy.

I don't know if anyone else is watching Nuggets Thunder but Holmgren looks like he might be taking it up a level this year. They definitely look like a finals favorite.

If Anthony Davis can get a whole season of this, Lakers may be a top 5 team. Big "if" but the guy looks like the max potential version of himself out of the gate.

Sorry for the paywall

As they cruised to a championship last season, the Boston Celtics seemed to have solved the sport of basketball. Fielding a roster stuffed full of shooters, they took—and made—3-pointers at a league-leading rate. Their offense was statistically the best in NBA history.

But just a week into this season, the Celtics are sending a message to the rest of the NBA: That was just the warm-up.

In their first four games this year—all wins, by an average margin of 15 points—the Celtics are firing up even more triples that they did last season. And this time they’re not just nudging the math of the game in their favor: They’re burying opponents under avalanches of the most valuable shot in the sport. Forget solving the game. The Celtics now seem determined to break it.

Joe Mazzulla is an odd duck. It's the start of his career but seems like he is either the next Popovich/Jackson style of coach playing mind games to push his team to greatness or will be a great answer to a trivia question when he flames out due to style. Not sure which side I think he will end up but it is entertaining to see.
