I think that was/is in the plans & the decent plan has to start now. Haven’t seen his weights to be able to know if that is still in play
I believe Schon is part of the gambling fiasco and may have lost a year of eligibility (not sure if full year or percentage). He was on his way done until then.

He should still have 3 years of eligibility after this season as he gray-shirted with Paniro and red-shirted last season.
Hopefully, with 3 years left and Bastida coming back next season, he'll try and make the line-up at 197.

Yeah heard the same. Then that BS happened and they told him the same as Paniro just worry about wrestling and not weight management .

Schon doesn't have much of a sample set to look at vs. DI guys, but he seems to be a pinning machine whenever he goes to open tournaments, and that's at 285.

I know he wrestles close against bigger heavys and has gotten beat by some decent guys, but again, this is all up at 285. He does some very athletic stuff for a big dude.

Thinking ahead to portal season, curious what some options might be out there for us and what will be the biggest needs.

I think we've got six spots nailed down for sure

133 - Frost
141 - Echemendia
149 - Swiderski/Johnson
157 - Chittum/Johnson
174 - Gaitan
285 - Yonger

Of the other four, if I had to rank biggest need for an upgrade it'd go

1. 197 - Broderson has COVID year available, not sure if he'd use it but we have to get better here. I doubt Hagerty is ready to be impactful and it'd be a lot to ask of Bartelt to come in and be ready right away
2. 125 - Kind of the same as 197, but Kysen at least has show the upside if it were to all click magically in a final season. Perryman hasn't show that he's up to it yet and no body coming in at this weight right now.
3. 165 - I dont think Chittum is big enough to move up here, so it's Euton who seems like a good tough wrestler but can upgrade from if the right guy is there.
4. 184 - Naak's redshirt year hasn't been much to write home about, but the upside is clearly there and I think he probably really needed a year to get to full sized 184 and acclimate. I think the weight is his next year unless something falls in your lap

I'd be in Ayala's ear all offseason again if he'd listen. Be curious if someone like Facundo would transfer if he doesn't feel like he's going to crack that lineup next year. Obviously a the Metcalf connection there. Cardenas mentioned would be big one who I think will have to go elsewhere to use COVID year. Hamiti if he wanted to leave Wisconsin. I'm sure lots of other names will pop up that surpise folks too.

125 165 and 197 are the weights that we have to attack hard I believe. Like I mentioned in the comment above. Cardenas would be a good guy to go after. 165 if hamiti transfers that would be a good get. Then idk about 125. But guys we can say all this stuff but if people do not donate to it’s going to be tough.

Some other guys in the room I can see adding depth/competing for some of those weights would be Manny Rojas at 165 (haven't seen a thing from him this season though), Caleb Helgeson has looked decent in his outings at 184, Nando at 197, and Nate Schon at 197, if he can get down there.

I'd definitely take high-level transfers at any of those weights, though.

Looks like Jacob Cardenas will most likely transfer next year. That would be a good get at 197!
He has been in the transfer portal for 6 months as he can’t use his COVID year at Cornell. Be shocked if he doesn’t go the PSU. But would love to be shocked.

We don’t even need a “high level” transfer to make a positive impact (see Jason last year) but you’re still going to need money to do anything. People need to donate.

I agree on the part where you need to donate! However, Jason Krassier is a good wrestler, but realistically he’s a backup for a team like us. Iowa state is trying to take the next step in the program. We do need higher level transfers because we need to see the program grow. That’s what Oklahoma state did and look how much better they are this year. The manny Rojas’s and Caleb helgesons are great guys to have in the room however they are not guys I want wrestling because there upside does not seem high. If you watched manny wrestle he just doesn’t wrestle to the level as he was recruited at. Wrestling is changing and adding transfers is so crucial in the sport. Oklahoma state is a great example this year.

Yea, I’m sure PSU has been extremely frustrated the past few years with all the AA guys sitting on the bench.
PSU to the rest of the wrestling world "Oh our AA is out for the season guess we will go to check notes our other AA guy. "

I keep thinking (probably wishfully) that Facundo could. I'd be surpised if Haines/Messenbrink don't bump up after this year. So they'll have Haines (2 years w/ RS available), Messenbrink (3 years), Facundo (3 years), and Sealey (4 years w/ RS available) next year for two weights. Then PJ Duke and William Henckel in the class right after that. A lot of eligibility and bodies there. We've got a 165 spot that he can have for 3 seasons :)
