Actually not surprised. He is just like Chizik - had an amazing career ahead of them as coordinators but by the time they got knocked back down from HC to those roles, their uniqueness had already passed them by. Obviously their ego was going to tell them they could be HC and it’s 20/20 hindsight, but they never seemed like good HC candidates from the start. Vrabel is another perfect example.

He'd be a great hire for them

He was nominally Co-Offensive coordinator (in title) there.
Obviously knows Heupel's system which was great for UCF

And while his record isn't amazing at 13-12 at USF, they were 4-29 since Charlie Strong so... maybe?

Not right now $$$ in all likelihood. Granted his buyout is only around 5 million, with only being in air quotes but IDK if Arkansas has the money to then go make it attractive since they were already something like 11th or 12th in terms of compensation

With how much they threw at Calipari, I'd think that's more attractive of a job than maybe a decade ago. Who knows.
14-28 in SEC over 5 yrs is pretty bad.

I was thinking the same about Stoops at Kentucky. Until I checked and he got an extension a couple years ago through 2031 and would be owed something like $44M if fired after this season.

But maybe the stakes have become so high in the Big10 and SEC that they can't afford to languish with a bottom quartile program. In Stoops defense, in SEC games they were 3-5 during 2022 & 2023 seasons. So maybe the AD can spin 2024 as a blip and kick the can down the road for a year with Wildcat fans.

Same goes for a 3-5 Razorback team for 2024. I checked and Pittman is owed $12.1M- he might be in trouble.

Right, but the problem is right now, Arkansas is simply a get rich job. Especially with Texas now there.

Texas, Ole Miss, Bama, Georgia, LSU, Tennessee, possibly Auburn / Oklahoma , right? A&M. Right there, there are 9 jobs that are either easier to win at and richer, and that doesn't include Florida. And wherever you wanna put Misery.

So, realistically while it might end up paying OK as things presently stand... IDK if that's real attractive

Coaches are competitors. So unless a coach feels they are on deck for one of the top tier jobs, they'll take the risk on an Arkansas or Purdue type job. Heck in the SEC jobs like MSU and Arkansas are tryouts for the top tier jobs.

Maybe young ones are, yeah. One of the reasons CMC has stayed at Iowa State, or a Stoops at Kentucky, etc - in a general sense - is that its better places in terms of job stability when it comes to raising a family etc.

Do I want to make 4-5 million a year, but know that I've probably got at least 6 years, maybe 5 before I get canned?

Or do I want a job where I make 6 million, but might be out the door in 2-3 years? Sure, money helps. Competition is nice.

But so is not having to move your family all the time and that matters

See, if I was Arkansas, that'd be my first call. Yes, he he doesn't have ties. But Arkansas in the SEC is somewhat similar to Iowa State. Developmental, could be blue collar, etc but not a blue blood.

Honestly, if I am North Carolina, I call. You have resources, money, and good but perhaps not elite in state recruiting. I'd be far more worried if they called then Purdue. Sure, the ACC might be outside the Big 2 as well, but UNC has an "easier" path.

That said, I think UNC already knows who they are after and if he says yes, should hear something fairly soon. Which, I mean, duh, is the way it usually goes. But also, would be a relatively quick process.
