***2022 PGA Tour Thread***

You're stuck on some black and white thing where someone either only cares about "excellence" or only cares about money.

In one season Tom Brady helped the Bucs go from being last in their division for like a decade to the Super Bowl, crazy **** happens.
TB actually was just a QB short of being a competitor, that was well-known at the time. Good enough RBs, insane WR corps, enough everywhere else to get there. Their situation was very similar to Stafford/Rams last year.

Not much good to speak of about JAX at really any position group.

As someone who is pretty competitive I just can't imagine being one of the best at what I do and choosing to play in a non-competitive environment. There are no stakes. What's the point? It'd be like some high level NBA players choosing to quit the NBA and play in pickup games at the Y just because they were being offered a lot of money.

If it was just about competition for you why would you need the money at all?

Being a noon-hour YMCA wunderkind made me fabulously wealthy.

Decent, I suppose, if you overlook the fact that these guys prefer money over competitive environments. I look at these guys the same way I would look at Aaron Rodgers (or any other top NFL talent) if he went to Jacksonville for a big payday. Good for you, but obviously excellence is not your priority.

LOL

If there was a Chinese league offering guys $100M/year guaranteed, you would see NBA players jumping ship as fast as they could.

Calling it a non-competitive environment is silly

They've already been paid and there's not even a cut line. Barely anyone can watch the product. It seems pretty darn non-competitive to me.
Whether they've been paid or not (many have not gotten a ton), an extra $4 million is a decent incentive (you know, to pay for mortgage, car payment, kids expenses, other bills).

Literally everyone can watch the product.

There’s a handful of no cut events in the PGA tour too

Have they released viewership numbers? Anecdotally speaking I don't know anyone who has watched it and I know quite a few golf fans. It seems that barely anyone watches it.

It seems clear you are a big LIV supporter so out of curiosity what are your reasons? Honest question I just want to get your thoughts. If you've already shared them in this thread and don't mind directing me to that I will be glad to read them.

I like watching non-stop golf for 4.5 hours rather than 10 hours of waiting to hit, features, and an occasional good shot. I don't really care about the team aspect. I am a fan of Bryson so that adds to it too.

I will continue to watch PGA events too

A lot of golf fans are older, so getting them to watch youtube on their TV is a big ask. Once a TV network picks up the tournaments viewership will increase.

I will add to my reasons above for watching the LIV tour is because the response from the PGA has been so salty and mishandled in my opinion.

I suppose it's all in how one views this situation but I can understand why the PGA Tour would be salty. This is a new competitor who is actively recruiting talent away from them. I think the PGA Tour is implementing some good changes which will result in more money in the players' pockets. I'm a big golf fan so it's disappointing for me that there's two competing sides resulting in a watered down product.

I think the PGA has a right to be salty.

The Majors stand on their own and aren't PGA run. So the Masters, US Open & British Open have the prestige and history to remain the top golf tournaments.

LIV offered golfers big money for 14 weeks and expected the PGA to sit by and let LIV golfers fill out their golf schedules (and pocketbooks) by playing 10-20 PGA tournaments.

Why would the PGA sit by an allow LIV golf to relegate the PGA Tournaments to a 3rd level league?

LIV's litigation is complaining antitrust and that could be a justified legal argument. But I think the PGA needs to minimize that complaint in public and highlight the real issue- LIV's business modeled is flawed! Elite golfers and young golfers trying to hone their game can't just play 15-20 tournaments a year. LIV could invest in 20 more tournaments, but it's cheaper for the PGA to subsidize LIV golfers.

I think it's safe to say that players would play on both the LIV tour and PGA tour if they were allowed, but the PGA decided to ban LIV golfers instead, watering down their own product.

Didn't LIV's attorney admit the earnings go against the guaranteed money?

You can't act like the gaurunteed money doesn't create a non-competitive environment. There's a reason the nobodies keep winning. That $4 million means alot more to them than it does DJ or Bryson and there $125 million.

I also don't think you can discount what would do to their work habits. How much time do you suppose DJ and Brooks have spent on the range this last month? Again, they are paid and they have no incentive to care.
