***2021 Olympics thread***

I’m not totally convinced the one is human (just kidding, but sheesh).

14 years old (just turned 14 in March). 2 perfect dives (all 7 judges scoring 10, two of those 10’s are dropped) and 1 that was 0.5 points short of “perfect” (even though the 9.5 was dropped). 24 out of a 35 scores were 10’s. Shattered the Olympic record.

Incredible.
Totally agree. This is the best driving performance I've ever watched in the Olympics. I'm in awe of what human beings can achieve in sports. Simply unbelieveable.

ICYMI, here's the highlights.

Sooo…the US is kicking some tail in wrestling. Dake beat Chamizo for bronze and Gable Steveson wins gold on a last second go behind against Petriashvili. Both this morning. Add those to Gilman’s bronze and Taylor’s gold won in earlier sessions. Still to come is the grand daddy. Snyder/Sadulaev will meet for the gold. The winner secures the unofficial team title between the US and ROC!

Then you have the women who are doing just as well. Tamyra Mensah-Stock is golden, Adeline Gray silver and Helen Maroulis bronze. Two more wrestling for medals still to come including Jacarra Winchester and Sarah Hildebrandt.

Amazing performances!!

Steveson's match was nuts. Kicked Petriashvili's ass in the first period to go up 4-0. Gave up a two but got the reversal to stay up 5-2. Then when he gave up that second takedown and then two guts to go down 8-5 I thought it was over. Re-watched and ref restarted them with 13 seconds on the clock and he was down three. Hit a quick go behind and cut him with 6.5 seconds left and then hit another go behind to win it. I think there was 0.2 on the clock when Petriashvili's knee hit on that winning takedown.

Dude is a star. I'm going to be seriously bummed if/when this is the end of his wrestling career and he goes to WWE or MMA. He could rack up some serious medals in his career if he kept wrestling.

1. Jamaica
2. USA
3. Great Britain
1. Italy
2. Great Britain
3. Canada

Hell of a final leg. Italy won by a hundredth of a second.

Italy has been a huge surprise in T&F. Without getting a single medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics, they now have 5 golds (0 silvers and 0 bronzes) and are tied with USA in the gold medal count. Who would bet Italy could win men's 100m and 4x100m relay? Who would predict they could win both men's and women's 20km race walks? Those were all upset wins. Although USA has run away with the medal total, there have been too many missed opportunities (12 silvers and 6 bronzes). It's impossible to match the 13 golds USA received in the Rio Olympics. If USA had half the luck Italy got, they should have got at least 10 golds now.

USA baseball is playing in the gold medal game Saturday morning at 5 a.m. central time.
Thanks for the update. Holy crap I lost track of the baseball team. I thought they lost to Japan? Can someone explain this to me in simple terms? I can’t figure out their “bracket”.

I thought yesterday man we are really doing well in wrestling this year but I hadn’t gotten up super early to watch it live. Boy, am I glad I did today!!! Somebody can check me but this feels like the strongest wrestling performance we have put together as a country in a long, long time.

also, I’m not the biggest Gable fan but there is no denying his absolutely, unbelievable talent. And this is just really cool….

For 275 lbs, it's amazing how cat quick Steveson is. The Georgia world champ probably thought he had it with only 6.5 seconds left.
Loved the patented back flip after the win.

I don't really understand the brackets either. This article helps a little?

So they'll either get gold or silver tomorrow. A guaranteed medal is nice.

If you apply what you learn in that article to this, this you can see a little better how it works. But, boy, doing a bracket that way makes very, very little sense.

Steveson is one of the few wrestlers who is so dynamic at his weight he can safely make up a deficit at the end of a freestyle period. Normally it goes down like what happened to Dake and you continue to dig your own grave.

Why wouldnt you be a Gable fan? He consistently beats Cassiopi and the Hawks and is about 10x more likeable than Mason Parris.

At this point US track and field needs to evaluate the coaching on the Mens sprint side. Everyone seemed to peak at the trials. Your 100m trials champion would have won with a 9.7 had he been at that level but didnt even make the final. Both champions finished behind the second place trials finisher at the 100 and 200 distance. And the 4x100 relay is still a disaster.

It’s pretty easy to see how some might not like him. He’s cocky and brash. That kind of outwardness rubs people the wrong way sometimes as it’s seen as disrespectful.

Totally agree. The men’s team is in complete disarray. Did I see correctly that they won’t win a single gold medal? That is insane.

Agreed. This would be why. That said, he just proved himself to be the best the entire world, with an effort that required some serious testicular fortitude. I think he’s earned the right to act however he wants, he backed it all up.

The disaster that is and has been the 4x100 is mystifying. I can understand not winning gold when Jamaica had Bolt and several other great runners, but they've just been a disaster for four straight Olympics (the one medal they've won over that span had to be given back because Gay is a doper).

This year I think it had more to do with Team USA getting too cute with who they put in the race. How many of those guys would have raced the finals had they made it? USA swimming almost had a similar disaster.
